Mariners taking hits

101 in Central Oregon today... will be watching the M's and Giants inside with the AC on. I'll be sucking cold beers and smoking chicken on the traeger in the background.... BTW, who is that right fielder for SF, I could have made that catch on JP's fly ball to right (well maybe in my prime... OK maybe never, but a quality RF makes that catch).

National League or American League, who ya got?? (rooting American, would bet on National).

cheers

This is cool. COME TO SEATTLE CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP.

Jerry Dipoto has gotten a CLEAR direct order from the element he needs the most to be successful; the fan base. I say give Angels Bryce Miller, Robby Ray, and Kelenic.

Zero chance Ohtani will land in Seattle.

Man, I hope you are right! Going from one losing franchise to another is not a very good career choice. The Dodgers are a far more logical choice with their deep pockets and winning tradition. The Mariners have an all-time winning percentage of .473 and I don't see that improving dramatically with a single player. It would amount to a freakishly great player on a traditionally abysmal team, a sideshow as it were and a profitable one but not a winning one.

I figure Giants will be strong in the mix as free agent. Unlikely Seattle will spend what it's going to take to land him as an FA. Trade? Seattle doesn't have anyone attractive enough to trade for. Why would the Angels trade the best and most overachieving player in baseball for 3 underachievers like the ones named? If he get's traded, it will be for a few players of much higher value than anyone Seattle has, with the possible exception of J Rod.

Zero? Cmon man - can I get at least a .01% chance? Please?

It was interesting listen to Chuck Powell interview Scott Boros yesterday on KJR.
When asked why Seattle has a hard time attracting too free agents, in kind of a roundabout way he blamed ownership for not doing enough as far as a commitment to the franchise. Thinking winning and spending money.

Why am I not surprised that Scott Boros thinks more money is the answer....

I do get his point (spending money shows the appearance of a commitment to win). BUT....there's not that I can see a rock solid correlation between spending and winning.

The NY Mets 2023 total payroll is $348,42,401 (highest in MLB). They're winning percentage is .467
The Padres are third highest payroll at $249,821,300 and they're at a .478 clip.
Angels are 6th on the list, spending $217,470,073, and area at a .495 clip.
Meanwhile the Rays are at $76,562,188 (28th lowest out of 30) and are winning at a .624 clip, and the orioles are at $67,776,039 (29th out of 30th) and are winning at a .607 clip. Not to mention the reds (25th out of 30), marlins (22nd out of 30), diamondbacks (21st out of 30) and brewers (20th out of 30) who area all in the lower half of spending and playing winning baseball.

He couldn’t just come out and say Seattle is a shit franchise, which it is because he still has to work with them in regards to the players he represents on the team and possible future negotiations.
He used the Rangers as an example of an owner making the commitment to spend.….to win.
I agree, spending doesn’t always equate to winning.

I think Dipoto is doing it the right way. At the start of the "rebuild", they loaded up on pitching prospects and it is paying off. Do I wish they had a couple more bats? Sure, but it's a pitcher's ballpark. I think they are trying to build something sustainable for the long haul. Mortgaging your future for a big name free agent can be a rabbit hole that takes years to exit.
