Dan definitely had a rough start and the peanut gallery could have handled their end better too. Plenty of blame to go around. Probably can even blame me for not locking down the thread earlier on when things got heated the first time (posts removed now).

In any case, this thread is probably not the best place to judge this forum's culture nor @FlyFishDan

He wasn't a bad dude . . . . he came up to me at the Sandy Spey clave years ago and began his introduction by saying 'you may have heard of me'. Soon after he moved on and was showing his flies to Gary Loomis. We were all chuckling. Something about that made me think of a Chihuahua humping a Rottweiler's leg. Some folks really want to help others but have a tough time figuring out how.

I tied a few of his flies. like any fly they sometimes worked but far from his claims.

Pretty much how things went down with him on the old site. Dude made such a fool of himself and threw a massive toddler-like tantrum. Was quite the spectacle.

Anyways, all that to say that this thread and its participants were extremely well-mannered and mild by comparison, haha.
 
Becoming a new forum (any forum) member is a bit like starting a new job; it's important to exercise a bit of humility, learn about how it operates, and resist telling the existing members that they're doing it all wrong and don't know their ass from a hole in the ground....show a modicum of respect and you'll receive it in return.

I can land src with a 4 wt faster than most seem to land them with a 6. I do not doubt an experienced angler can quickly land a quality steelhead with a trout spey, but those types of anglers are far out numbered by people with much less experience. People hire a guide much of the time because they want to learn how to catch fish. If people see me targeting src with a 4 wt and landing them quickly, then they may go out and buy a 4 themselves and then spend 12 minutes landing 15" fish. It's not a good example for me to be giving. I have to imagine a large portion of Dan's viewer base is newer fly anglers searching the web to learn about all things fly fishing in the NW. If watching a video of him fishing a trout spey for steelhead gives them the impression that this is totally normal and anyone can/should do it, then that's not a good thing IMO.

I do not doubt Dan's ability to quickly land a steelhead using such a rod. No doubt it can be done by those who have the ability and experience to do so. But the simple fact is that most do not. I think anyone in such a position, myself included as a guide, should always be thinking about how our actions are perceived by those with less experience. I catch myself constantly on albacore trips doing things that Id definitely not want my average customer to do. Because I have caught thousands of albacore, I do things that I don't want people who come out once a year to be doing. It's nothing against them or their ability, rather it's a result of the stupid amount of experience I have been blessed to rack up courtesy of my job. But I have to remember that if people see the captain do it, they're likely to think they can do it to.

I'm sure Dan and plenty of others can land a fish quickly on that rod. I'm also just as sure that a high percentage of people watching his videos cannot, and absolutely should not attempt it, and it should not be encouraged or sold by someone in such a position.

Wait, no 4 weights on your SRC trips but you allow asshats to have perfection loops on the tuna set-ups brought on the tuna boat? I think you need to add a leader inspection to the tuna boat pre-boarding process next year :).

What do you think is in that form he makes us sign before he lets us aboard? Shoot, he's already frisking me to make sure I don't have any pickled eggs, but I think that's really just 'cause he's such a touchy-feely kind of guy.

I only used a perfection ONE time. The look Nick gave me was more of a scolding than any words could have done....

So… what is the right loop knot to use for handshaking leader to fly line? Non-slip Mono loop like we use to the fly? Or a figure 8 surgeon type loop?
 
That's what I've gone to as well.


I think @Jake Watrous needs to run some tests...
