A juxtaposition

I saw this in a issue of Fly Fisherman
Magazine. I thought the page placement was interesting. Blasting your favorite tunes on one page and β€œQuiet Waters” on the next page😁.
I’m not judging either. To each their ownπŸ€™.

People who blast music in the outdoors are some of my least favorites. Completely oblivious to the fact that literally nobody else wants to hear their crappy music, and they're ruining the experience for others. Sure, the "back at the lodge" part of the copy is fine, but I don't think that's what the target audience is planning to use it for. At least based on my experience.

There's a time ,and place for the tunes , but IMO not on the river or lake . Unfortunately there are the few that need to blast it out there for everyone . I thought thats why they invented AirPods . I do have to confess with this new boat I did try the CD player in it , and listened quietly to some Patsy Cline , and I do mean quietly . :)

I feel like patsy should get a pass. Grandfather in "Crazy" and "Walkin After Midight" at the very least. If someone complains about patsy I'd suggest they let that one marinate!

I USED to have an account with ----- shop along the Madison River. They were good to deal with but they broke my dealing with them when one of their emails promoted one of those DAMN music boxes suggesting how wonderful it is to drift the Madison with music blasting. I live for and love music but I don't want to listen to, or hear anyone else's music when I'm fishing. I want to hear nature. I like to hear the sound of a trout rising behind me, chukars calling at Lenore (yesterday), sandhill cranes calling..... Tool? Wagner? Bob Marley? They have their place but not on the lakes or rivers I frequent.

I was out to RF in early spring when a couple, I believe husband and wife showed up with their walkie/talkies turned up as load as possible and kept up talking/yelling to each other when they were only a few feet apart.
I kept moving farther away and they kinda kept following me.
I finally just left.
There are a few places I like to fish but even the hi-way traffic noise runs me off.
I like to fish alone and when I use to drink, I drank alone cause there is always some load mouth that wants to hear themselves talk.
I say "shut the f--k up" and fish.

Pretty sure this is the same group of people that uses speakerphone on its loudest setting in restaurants and other public spaces.

I'm a big promoter of headphones - you want your music? Headphones are the solution.

I personally don't do music outdoors at all. Not even when I'm doing my distance running sessions. When I'm outside, I want to hear the outside. But it's getting increasingly more difficult. There's a paved running/bike trail near me, and there's days where I'm getting passed by endless dweebs on their e-bikes, ALL blasting music. I had a day two weeks ago where I had no less than a half dozen e-bikes all have loud bluetooth speaker music blasting. It's just the worst.... If it gets any worse, I may have to acquiesce and just start wearing headphones so at least I can hear my own music and not theirs.

Waaaaayyyyy more often than not the only music I want to hear when I'm fishing is my or my buddy's click and pawl reel singing.
Getting off the subject a bit ,but you brought up the click ,and pawl . My first fiberglass fly rod was a Fenwick bought in the mid 70's , broke it sometime in the 70's . Anyway a FF856 , serial # dates to being built in 1976 popped up on a local classifieds , and later on a Pflueger 1495 . Looking forward to fishing it ,being a bit nostalgic about it , and hearing that click , although that Pflueger does have a drag.

I don’t run, but I walk my dog, often with a favorite hickory walking stick. I consider it a calming influence. β€œThere's nothing like a nice piece of hickory.” (Preacher)

I think I've mentioned this in a previous thread similar to this one. I met up with a couple of people for some musky fishing some 5+ years ago. They were in a raft, had a little speaker and were playing some tunes (some reggae shit at low volume)....ok fine, I thought, I'm not going to fish near them. I saw a half dozen and bagged two (they even were nice enough to come over and take a photo of number 2--which came from an area they had already covered an hour earlier) while they didn't even spot one all day.

granted, it was a pretty special one...

Forget for a moment that I would never want to be playing music over a speaker while fishing (nor do I even use headphones), but it's simply not good for fishing either because loud unnatural noises spook fish. There's also a reason to talk quietly and not bang around in the boat when fishing for [insert your favorite fish here]...you don't stomp through the water to get in position for a delicate dry fly fish, do you?

back at camp? I have no problem with a little bit of music at lower levels as long as it's not bothering anyone else (probably rules out my favorite style, metal) but even then it's not something I'm personally doing.

A few years ago, I was wading on the West Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine in the canyon above the Little Eddy Pool. It is a very serene spot where you can "Zen" out. From the far bank, some knucklehead "bro" came out of the woods and was yelling (not speaking) into a sat phone so he could be heard over the river. He was actually telling the connection what a quiet cool place he was at. I took great umbrage at his intrusion and chided him with great intensity (just yelled the shit out of him). Luckily, the river there is too swift to wade across, so I was protected from his threats. So, all he could do was give me the finger! He did leave and as the nearest crossing was a long way down river, I was ok to fish for a long time in case his ardor did not cool.

While my music choices are awesome and unsurpassed in quality, other people's music choices suck donkey balls, so I figure why waste my time trying to educate them musically.

Leave your tunes in the car please.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
:)

there's a knucklehead who shows up periodically at the Quinn River arm of Crane Prairie with a 24' houseboat pulled by a max cab diesel truck with 6 guys in it. This is a small launch ramp into a shallow channel. Usually takes them a half hour to get the beast launched, then they cruise the two hundred yards down the channel through what is usually a small flotilla of float tubers, reach the channel mph buoy and tie off to it, crank up the country music and begin soaking worms, yelling and hooting every time one of them pulls up a fish and conks it in the head.
I know Hank wouldn't a done it that way....
