Caught a starry as a kid that had to have been close to 24''. Thing was an absolute pig. First one I'd ever caught and I remember being real excited about it. Have caught them occasionally since while fishing for SRC. Caught an english sole last year while fishing for lingcod bait that had...

    Sky not until Nov 1st.

Yes with only 35,000 planted for this summer's return, I wonder whether preserving that brood stock plays into the closure decision as well. Unlikely, but if it was I think I'd actually feel better about it as it would suggest someone cares about the Sky summer run. It used to be my favorite...

    Deer Creek summer steelhead

Smalma; Thank you for the information. Deer Creek steelhead escapements are not listed on SCORE. Makes me wonder how many other runs have data that's been collected but not widely shared. That's not a shot at WDFW. I am just very interested in this stuff as I am sure most of us are. What...

    Occupy Skagit, on steroids.

Below is a link to the SCORES map. It is very easy to search by river basin. https://fortress.wa.gov/dfw/score/score/maps/map_wria.jsp

    Third time’s the charm

Those fish are one of my personal pet peeves lol. Tried a half dozen or more times half heartedly and never got into them. I think I've hooked a total of one life time. Nice report and fish!

    NOF 2026

Thank you. That was one reason that jumped out to me, though I don't know whether Skykomish and Snoqualmie chinook are viewed separately aside from setting the initial exploitation rates. The other was that with wild Snohomish chinook up and hatchery Snohomish chinook down (while still in the...

    Non-Fly 2026 Blackmouth

Nice report. Do you mind I don't think I've ever seen an explanation from WDFW of how the "shaker", unmarked, and legal marked encounter limits established in chinook mark selective fisheries translate to exploitation rates under the management plan. Area 10 currently has a coho retention...

    NOF 2026

I was not able to attend the call in meetings. Did WDFW give an explanation on why Snohomish chinook were such a problem this year? The native component overall was up.

    Non-Fly 2026 Blackmouth

I do think that viewing the expenditure of impacts in terms of how much opportunity they provide is the right approach. However, I wonder if viewing chinook in isolation provides a full picture. The core Puget Sound areas of 9 & 10 have resident and ocean coho available from roughly June...

Strange, weird or odd or whatever beach finds thread….

Fly looks like a home-made version of an aerofly, marabou version. Caught my first steelhead drift fishing one back when they were a hot new thing.

WDFW did not request funding for a 2027 Skagit-Sauk season

Perhaps defunding of hatchery production in the name of wild fish recovery is a convenient means of government eliminating ongoing liabilities so that money can be diverted to other (non-fishing) purposes.

Good to see the rezzies around. Looks like they are fat and healthy.

    Skagit game fish regulation proposal

I guess I am confused why, if the believed major driver in bull trout mortality is the tribal sockeye fishery, we are talking about recreational fishery restrictions? I am not opposed to C&R of bull trout in the recreational fishery, but if this is being brought as a part of NOF and the real...

Marine Area 9 - I need your help

What I struggle to understand is why the Department (and anglers?) seem so dead-set on holding summer chinook retention seasons starting in mid July. It feels to me as though A9 seasons are being held hostage by that decision. Past years A9 has opened 7 days a week starting 8/1, so there is...

    PNW Flood Watch - Dec 8-12, 2025

Welp sounds like it washed out. They'll have it fixed again by 2045.

Would be funny (not really) if Galena Road washed out again after all the work put in.

Strange, weird or odd or whatever beach finds thread….

Fished the central sound earlier in the week and took home a few flounders. Found the below in one's belly. Was maybe 3-4 inches long. Any ideas on what it is? My guess is juvenile pollock. If correct it is encouraging to see that reproduction.

    Puget Sound

One of the simplest ways I think for differentiating our "trout" vs. "salmon" is by the anal fin. Trout will have fewer rays, making the anal fin appear about as deep or deeper than it is long. Salmon have more rays, meaning the anal fin will appear longer than it is deep. The angle of the...

    Non-Fly Puget Sound Lingcod

Live bait is best IMO, but I have caught several Puget sound lings on leadheads and plastics, sometimes tipped with strips of bait, sometimes just scent. Don't jerk them, just swim them.
