NOF 2026

Thanks SF and Curt (though sad to read).

I saw extra NS days added to MA 9 coho, that's the most we had had in years I think. What data is preventing any of the MA 9 NS coho days to be in October? Why exactly has October coho in 9 disappeared from the realm of possibility, based on the data?

I wasn’t involved in the process at the time October was cut in MA 9, but my guess is would be it had to do with Snohomish wild coho numbers.

With the Snohomish wild coho being a limiting factor I suspect the changing ratio of hatchery to wild coho in the basin played a factor. The hatchery coho tend to return earlier (earlier spawn timing) than the wild coho thus the later in the season (read October) the higher the impacts on the wild coho.

To Searunner's question about the driver in the status of the Snohomish Chinook is it is likely the declining number of Snoqualmie Chinook spawners. Looking at the recent escapements and the probable impact of December's record flood, I don't think the situation is likely to improve in the short term.

Thank you. That was one reason that jumped out to me, though I don't know whether Skykomish and Snoqualmie chinook are viewed separately aside from setting the initial exploitation rates. The other was that with wild Snohomish chinook up and hatchery Snohomish chinook down (while still in the 8.3% impact bracket due to Snoqualmie chinook), it seems to me with those changed proportions you would model more wild encounters per each hatchery fish retained, thereby increasing the exploitation rate of your MSF fishery?

As always great questions!

I think it would work the other way. For the moment let's assume that we start with 30 hatchery fish and 10 wild. in this case for every wild we can take 3 hatchery . However, if the number of wilds were cut in half giving us 5 wild and 30 hatchery. Now for ever wild we can take 6 hatchery in a marked selective fishery.

What would limit the exploitation rate would reductions in days fish accomplished by reducing the quota.

The older I get the greater the headache I get when I think about these things - probably good that I'm retired!

Been a few years for me. The homeowner across from the frog ponds still a prick?
I have yet to run in with him - The out of town crowds sure do suck though. Had a 40 year old with his family make snide remarks at me when I released a very dark chum (You're not gonna keep it 😱😂). His kid had his...trout rod drag all the way loose and I very nicely and politely suggested tightening the drag. (It was a shoulder to shoulder spot and he was running everywhere) I got a response of "yeah yeah we know what we are doing, we go fishing all the time". As expected the fish was foul hooked, and the dad proceeded to drag it up to the bank and bonk it. I couldn't resist against my better judgement and said "you go fishing all the time and you still don't know you can't keep snagged fish".

This was met with screaming from his wife, and his older son who looked around my age started approaching me with his clubbing stick...oh no. Well it turns out he was just did not understand the impression he was giving because he was actually walking up to me to apologize on behalf of his parents behavior, and it ended up being that we had went to elementary-middle school together. He politely asked me for some help with his catch card too. (IIRC they ended up catching a legal fish too)

I wasn't too pressed about it because the punishment of eating that moldy looking fish was worse than anything WDFW could have possibly done to them

Sounds like the normal experience fishing with the locals in Lynden.

Does it get better upriver or am I being too optimistic

Who am I kidding "upriver" and "better" are words seldom used together outside of national parks/forests and even that has asterisks lol
