Japanese Lantern

Jason Klass Originator

Hook - Firehole Sticks 316 or equivalent, #12

Head - 2 Small Crystal Pearl Glass Beads

Thread - Black (Unlit) or White (Lit)

Ribbing - Small Copper Wire, Silver (Unlit), Black (Lit)

Body - Thread

Hackle - Pheasant, India Hen, or Partridge

From the originator

My original Japanese Lantern used pearlescent Mylar for the head, but I recently updated it to use two glass beads instead. That little extra weight makes it sink faster, yet it’s not so heavy (like a tungsten bead) to be a struggle to cast with a tenkara rod. I tie them in two versions: light and dark (which I call “lit” and “unlit”) for differing water visibility and substrate color. This is a very versatile pattern and I have success with it both in dead drifts and downstream.

Trout Fin Sakasa Kebari

Hook - Mustad C49S, size 10

Thread - Pearsall’s Gossamer Silk Thread, color black

Hackle - Hungarian partridge

Body - Pearsall’s Gossamer Silk Thread, color hot orange, white and black

*I used Veevus thread

Author's Note

Notes (Kuhlow): This pattern was one of the first sakasa kebari variants I ever tied. I based it on the classic wet fly known as the Trout Fin. That fly was originally tied to simulate a brook trout fin which was intended to produce an aggressive territorial strike from another brookie. The contrasting colors also increase the visibility of the fly.

A few heavyweights, with a bit of lead wire, which I normally don't use.. GRHE and a pine squirrel muddler, to get down in the high fast water.

Tied up my first bass popper tonight. Seems very timely since @Billy just posted an SBS but unfortunately I didn’t see it before tying this beast up. Size large double barrel popper head on a 2/0 Ahrex Light Predator hook. Seems gigantic. Thinking I’ll trim the rubber after seeing Billy’s SBS.

Thank you for the vote of confidence. Am I going to want an 8wt? My online order smaller poppers cast ok on a 6wt but this seems big ha

I been casting stuff about that big on one my beach coho 6 weights. Thought process is; if it can cast a stinger clouser, it can probably handle a decent size popper just fine.

7 or 8 weight would be more enjoyable though.

Finding some fish in our general area at a few different spots. Going to try a new lake this weekend I think. Let me know if you want head out some time.
