To help with smaller flies and not building up bulk, put as little dubbing as you can on your thread. You'll think that it is crazy the amount of dubbing put on the thread like it won't even dub but trust me it will.

I think your right. I still tried to loop dub it, and I think if I touched and spun a tiny bit on the waxed tying thread it would size better. A skill to work on. Like many said in the why tie thread, I just love all the aspects of this pastime. Always something to learn and work on.

I don't tie or fish much small stuff, my boxes are about 1/2 size 8 flies. I have some small stuff, like 16 and 18 PT's, GRHEs, Griffiths, and Zug bugs, but I have no fine motor control and shake a bit from work injuries in my neck. I usually just don't have much luck with them small either. I like those eggstacy eggs in 14 though, those are easy and catch lots of fish.
I guess in my confidence fly game they are foods that are likely to be available year round, and big enough to be worth the fishes while to move for, size 8 hares ears, 6 3xl Pat's, size 6 and 8 stimulators and muddlers.
I'm just jokin with ya. More so because Im jealous that a 14 is considered small ;)

Fox Hole Special 3 1080.JPG

Fox Hole Special

Attractor Fly Pattern

Hook - Mustad 3665A or equivalent, size 6-8

Thread - Black

Ribbing - Flat silver tinsel

Body - Black floss

Throat - Yellow bucktail

Underwing - Orange bucktail

Wing - White marabou

Shoulder - Mallard or teal flank

Eyes (optional) - Painted black over white

The Fox Hole Special is one of the better landlocked salmon streamers, and brook trout will take it as well. It’s a so-called attractor pattern, and best described as a dressed-up Black Ghost Marabou, with yellow and orange bucktail and a shoulder added, the latter to imitate a gill plate. The fly is easy to see, has great action, and is just different enough that it will catch fish in pressured waters where the fish see pretty much everything else. The Fox Hole Special is one of the top ten landlocked salmon streamers in Maine.
