Just saw this as was getting off the plane. Not familiar with the tidal forces there, but, how the hell does the exchange reach 200 feet up a cliff ?

Like this….. I mean really. Get wet or die?
Anyone who has seen those cliffs knows it would be crazy to try and climb up or down them. I feel sorry for his wife.

I had to go back many pages to figure out what context I'd posted that . Damn, the place must be more dangerous than I thought.

I think he was way above sea level when he fell from the cliff.
Version I read, sounded like the exchange reached out to 200 feet and took him.... that's magnitudes of order higher than the Bay of Fundy.

No matter what, still a tragedy at 42

Somebody told me a story when I moved out here, I'm not sure if it's true.

Whidbey and other islands within sight have these high unstable packed gravelly tuff cliffs. My friend told me that sometimes a whole slice of the cliff drops to the water, making a very large wave that travels out to the next island and slaps its cliff. A slice of which drops to the water, maybe. Making a big wave. And a chain reaction.

Does that really happen?

I have been out here that long, but I don't think we have 200' tides.

Horizontally inland, sure.

I'm chalking it up to the "reporters" lack of mastery of the english language, as in, how to write a cohesive, descriptive and understandable sentence.

No 200’ tides. Winter king tides that might get to 17’ are about as high as you’ll see.
I grew up and fished there a lot and people would occasionally get trapped by the tides and have to get rescued from the base of the bluff. This would be true to many areas around sound and straits, but the Narrows will also be accompanied by stronger currents then other areas.
He should have stayed with his wife. She likely got wet, which is the worst thing that happened to her. Very unfortunate decision on his part.
If you ever walked down to the point on low tide and looked up, you’d realize how crazy of an idea it was to try and hike up the bluff there.

That's a sad story. When we used to hike Ozette to LaPush, the adults would do a safety talk every day, every year, about cliffs, tides, and where we needed to be and when. Even though we grew up playing around Kingston, those were new lessons. Like the other thread, unprepared and un-aware people can get in trouble and it doesn't end well.

A number of times over the years I've encountered folks heading down a cliff-lined beach as I'm heading back with the incoming, who, upon my asking if they know the tide is coming in, clearly did not. Some did not seem to understand what that even meant, and I had to point out the head-high water line on the cliff face where the level would be in a few hours.

I took my daughter and her family to PnoP for a beach walk. They headed out towards Eglon and her son wanted to go around the next point. She called me to let me know their plans. I enformed her that the tide was turning and they may not be able to make it back if the went much farther then where they were standing. So the turned around and started back. By the time they got back and turned around and looked where they had just returned from, she was very happy that she had made her son very unhappy. I was happy that she had called me before taking off. they don’t get 17 foot tide changes in California.

Yep, I think some folks think of the sound as a lake. Tides? You mean the water goes up and down? No way!
My gf and I do a three mile hike several times per year to a beach she likes to collect sea glass at. It is pretty much bluffs all the way along the route. We always start on the outgoing to give us enough time to enjoy the beach and get back in time before the incoming tide gets too high. I can’t tell you how many folks we’ve encountered trying to make it there half way through the incoming. When we talk to them and tell them about the tides, either they don’t care or just don’t get it. You’d be in a world of hurt if you got trapped down there, especially if there was a big high tide with a north wind.

Zak,
What you're describing is analogous to a glacier calving. In fjords, yeah I can see that happening. Same dynamics would apply in the location you mentioned, I'd guess.

Here, this happens in England. No way it wouldn't happen elsewhere

Yeah, sad indeed. Not point defiance, but I was stupid enough to try to climb out of a fishing spot as the tide came in. I got a well deserved scolding from the property owner.

Smoky morning on the beach. Not much going on, fish wise or my effort.
I called it early to get back through town before all the folks started showing up for the games today and boning up traffic.
Hard to believe folks kayak in PS without wearing a PFD.
Lots of divers out today.

When I was done fishing, I went to use the porta potty I had left my tailgate up. When I came back to my rig, there was someone’s dog in the back. 😂
It got confused which rig was his. The owner came and retrieved him. My Sage X got stomped again but survived.

So speaking of porta potties, WTF is wrong with people? You bring stuff to the beach in a bag and can’t think of a better place to dispose of it, like your garbage can at home. This state really has a bunch of lazy POS scumbags living here now.

That's funny about the dog. Reminds me this one time I came out to my van from grocery store except it was not mine, though identical.
I opened the door and there were 3 kids inside looking a little terrified like they're about to be kidnapped :)

I did that once. Car identical to mine was parked right next to me. I got in and a kid said “dad”. I got out of that car real fast.

Smoke on the water. Puget Sound and the Olympics are out there somewhere earlier today.
