Puget Sound

Seems like the run is solid in at least a few areas this year. The volume of fish around has been really impressive. The fishing was excellent again this weekend. As @Kfish mentioned, today we tried the buddy system to help each other unhook fish without beaching, but when we both ended up in the arabesque pose on different occasions sunk nut deep in muck trying trying to unhook flies from the others boot, we converted back to conventional chum landing techniques.

That it's so much food for all the little critters that need to eat. Chum have a interesting purpose in the food chain feeding off their bodies

I'm not tuned into the circle of life in the sound. What is the implication of orcas in the sound? Are they showing up to eat seals that eat the salmon and steelhead?
There are two populations of Killer Whales in the Puget Sound: The Mammal Eating Biggs, and the Southern Resident Killer Whales eat exclusively fish, around Puget Sound and the coast primarily salmon. Because it takes so much energy to hunt down a single fish, they heavily depend on big mature Kings, but will happily eat other species as well when available. Right now, they are hunting chum. If the local King Salmon on display at Pike Place is anything to go by, I wouldn't be surprised if this year the chum are bigger and more nutritious than the Kings anyway.

That cove holds particular significance. In 1970, more than 80 SRKW were rounded up were herded to be taken into the marine park and aquarium industry. 5 whales drowned, and 47 were captured, including the daughter of L pods oldest surviving female, named Lolita, and renamed Tokitae by her many advocates. The SRKW avoided that cove ever since, this is the first time they returned.

Thanks! We were there for a couple of days at the end of October. Just missed the opening. Caught lots of fish. Fish in a huge rainstorm that ended up with a beautiful rainbow saw the most fish jumping I’ve ever seen in my life. 😎 Life is good

Although I'm really enjoying fly fishing, I've spent a lifetime curing eggs and just can't shake the addiction.
Dem chum produce the best steelhead eggs in the world.
It's a shame people eat those fine skeins.

He was ok, evidently walked home but left the empty kayak and pfd

Cool to see the amount of responders
6 boats and 10 cars

Stay safe out there folks

I never like being out of swimming distance to the shore. I guess one could get pretty far out and then need a rescue if you could not upright or re-enter and get moving again or lost your paddle.

Don't know the particulars of this kayaker rescue, nor the areas you paddle (river, lake, protected saltwater, Puget Sound, open ocean, etc), but regardless of experience unexpected situations can happen at anytime, "shit happens" and as weather gets colder the price can be pretty high. Once shit happens, the best rescue is self rescue, re-entry skills and practice are a must. There has been a steady increase of paddler's deaths, below some usefull tips on how to stay safe out there, applicable not only to paddle sports but water craft in general posted at NorthWest Kayak Anglers (NWKA), there's also a whole safety section with tons of information.
Stay safe out there!

Hit the canal today. Ended up with seven fish to hand and another half dozen or so lost. Biggest were in the 12-14” range but lost one larger fish on a jump and saw some bigger fish jump. Definitely not my favorite tide. Decent wind conditions to go with the wet weather. 45° when I started fishing this morning.
A good number of smelt spawning. I usually see them spawning on sandy beaches but these were over decent sized cobble.
I foul hooked one that jizzed eggs all over my hands and rain jacket. It would take a decent sized cutt to choke down a smelt and they weren’t getting molested from what I could see.

Took my boat out today for combo SRC & chums in south sound. Calm wind forecast was correct but it rained harder than predicted, which is fine.
I got my first searun on bamboo which was pretty cool, saw the whole eat when the fish shot out of the depth and inhaled the fly.

Also got into some chums, I hooked one but it shook the hook. We had one chum that ate @jasmillo drifting fly like bait while he was busy trying to net my fouled hook one :)

Fun day in the south sound. That time of year. Some SRC, some chum…and some potential new techniques unlocked ;). No strip needed. Dead drift, deep water chum’n!
I’ll net that for you Lou. Watch my rod though, just made a cast at those fish…..shit, the rod tips bouncing…ha.

Also fished a different chum spot yesterday. Crazy the number of fish still around, even with heavy netting underway.

What's with all the dead chum?
Big numbers of chum returning to some little creeks, the spawned out ones are piling up at the mouth because there’s not enough creek flow to push em out into the sound. If I’m understanding your question correctly - maybe you’re just asking why all the pictures of them
