Giving up in frustration

Well it took over 45 years, but my tying abilities have outgrown my vice, and the old Thompson B just won't hold a hook at all. I tried a Montana mongoose and a Peak, but went with a regal rotary. Coming UPS, so should be here by end of next week.20220129_101013.jpg

I hear ya'. I still use my decades old Thompson A, but it doesn't hold the long shank hooks as tight as needed either. Fortunately a friend who was moving away gave me her Regal, and it holds hooks very solid.

This one won't even be a hand me down for the grandkids, just too worn and I'm sure the collets won't take much more torque. Tried a regal knock off and liked the way it could go from a sz 18 for a little black spider to a 6 4xl for a stonefly, which I do often in summer, just not the finish/quality.
I love my Regal vice. It is not a true rotary but the head turns. Looking forward to your review!
I'll let you know how I like it. I don't currently have any desires for a new rod this year so I decided to go big and do the full rotary on a c clamp.

If I had the cash, I'd be looking at something else as well....currently tying on an HMH, which is fucking awesome! but for really big flies, it doesn't have the most room to work with.

Not to worry. Things like this happen when you get older . . .

I couldn't put my hands on an HMH to try but the standard vice was the one I almost got. If, for some reason, I don't care for the regal I figured I would try another then sell one. I figure this will be my last vice.

Haha. Yes, part of life at this point. My back went out last Saturday pushing the vacuum. Still can't get comfortable, sit in one place or stand long. Stairs suck and no driving. I'll start PT again this week though.

I keep wanting to get a Regal, but just can’t can’t seem to justify a new vice. My Renzetti travel vise from Teds sporting goods is still going after 20 plus years.

My Renzetti 4000 is still going strong after about 30+ years and I bought it used.

You can't go wrong with Renzetti.

Congrats on the new vise. I tied on an old regal vise I got used for $20 for years but have been using a renzetti traveler for probably the last 15-20. I still have and use that old regal fron time to time. Many fond memories from years gone bye.

I'm still tying on my Thompson A I bought in 1976. I have considered an up grade, but it does what I need it to do.
