Not the best angle, and the image is crappy (for some reason the actual image won't load, but a screenshot that's even bigger mB will), so I need some help with the ID, I'm guessing a Northern Flicker (female).

cheers
Yep, Northern Red Shafted Flicker.

But the red “mustache” gives it away as a male.

What mustache? I don't see a mustache, and the rather dull colors is what made me think female, but thanks, if you see a mustache, then male

So glad I listened to that little voice in my head that says "always take the camera and long lens, dummy" for our morning backyard desert hike:

Spring cantelope ... I mean antelope

Not exactly wildlife, but free ranging spring calves

Not sure what is going on with the photo uploads, I cannot seem to upload directly, not even downsize the JPEG, I have to take a screenshot and upload that, which will load, even though it's bigger file size than the JPEG, and it comes out crappy (looks out of focus) - very strange.

cheers?

This coyote is a regular in my back yard. He's walking along the levee between my house and the Des Plaines River in Chicagoland.
No hunting, this is a neighborhood, too bad. In the background is a golf course, and Mr. Coyote is entering my yard from an area of several hundred acres of bottomland, swamp, and scrub.

I really need a new camera to shoot the wildlife like this small group of a much larger group of the blue mountain elk

and the flowers as the world comes alive

The frog eggs are developing quickly. Two adults are around, but they keep hiding under the leaves.

I just heard the first frogs of the season peeping two days ago here in Chicagoland, but it got cold again so they've gone silent. To show how late we are in the season, my daffodils and tulips have pushed shoots up about 2" only so far.

Went up to one of my "backyard" lakes this morning, should not even be able to get there this time of year, but virtually no snow. Was hoping for a lot more birdlife, still maybe a bit early, but there were some.

Not sure what this guy was, never got a great view, he looked all black, relatively long necked, and I think a fairly long needle-like bill, some sort of Grebe (Apologies for the graininess, much cleaner prior to upload, not sure why)?

Soaring:

Both this photo and the earlier photos are of a double-crested cormorant, the only inland cormorant species. They can be identified by the yellow throat (gular) region.
Steve

Ahhh, thank you so much Steve!! You have a good eye to spot any coloring.

Cheers

This young robin has spent half the day, non-stop for at least six hours, trying to get into our house. He keeps fluttering against the window, then hops around looking for an opening, then tries the window again.

More likely, it is seeing its reflection in your windows and is attacking its reflection. I had a song sparrow that spent one summer dumping spittle on the mirrors of one of my cars.
