In winter, waves of mixed-species bird flocks will sweep through my yard in search of a meal, and not just at our bird feeders. Chickadees, pine siskins, and kinglets glean insects from the pine needles and branches.
Other birds look for stunned insects that have fallen to the ground after a cold, breezy night. I saw a great example of that on Sunday. The first wave to appear was a small flock of varied thrushes. Their presence is a reliable harbinger of snow in the foothills.

Mixed in with the varied thrushes was a single female Northern flicker.

The next wave consisted primarily of Oregon juncos.

They probed in the grass and in the shrubs that border the lawn. Their presence signals to our resident spotted towhees that the coast is clear to forage at the margins of the grass too.

Included in the group were three different sparrows: a juvenile golden-crowned sparrow,

a song sparrow,

and a juvenile fox sparrow (very unusual).

Something (or nothing) spooked the juncos and the bare branches of a young Western flowering dogwood were soon decorated with anxious-looking birds like holiday ornaments.
And they have reason to be wary. At first light, a raptor, either a Cooper’s hawk or a sharp-shinned hawk, buzzed past my office window – too fast for me to catch it with my camera.

Like Steve, I had a Fox sparrow. I suppose a pnw variety Sooty Fox sparrow. Had a backyard Coyote looking around as well. Wish I had Varied thrush right now but if we get some snow they will show from across the river and from the hills. Their call is a joy to go along with the rarity of snow living at about 15 feet above sea level here nearish the coast

More eagles are showing up in our valley

Still a Genuine Montana Fossil
A lot of happy native creatures cheering on the creek "bully" getting taken out by the Hitman
Dang, John - that looks too big for the Old Man of the Shorelines to swallow!
