Winter Olympics Watch...

Cooling towers from an old steel plant
Yes! I researched this after i posted the photo. Those plants have been shut down for awhile now but when they operated they polluted China for decades.

I look forward to watching all alpine skiing, especially slalom, and super G.
Snowboarding and short track ice skating too.
I feel bad that Michelle Shriffin blew her first 2 events.
After watching the mens’ half pike last night, I think someone from the Japanese team will win gold, Shaun White may possibly get bronze.

Something visceral ....... evil... about this..... Take away her passport & let her stay in the "people's republic"....
Makes me sick thinking about her choice.
Yes, she should go live in China then.

I hope he makes bronze but those Japanese Hirano dudes are amazing. I used to call it half pike! But it really IS half pipe right….because it looks like a pipe sawed vertically?

What i don’t know about the Olympics is only surpassed by what i don’t know about flyfishing!

However it doesn’t stop me from enjoying both!

Did you see that kid (15 yo) from Russia in women's figure skating? Leagues better than any of the other skaters in all categories. The only other skaters that could give her a run are from her country. She does lots of quadruples. But she is human, she missed one jump in her freeskate during team competition.

Bummed that Mikaela Shiffrin did not finish her first race. Was hoping she'd bring home lots of medals (mostly gold).

Pretty cool that the speedskater from the Netherlands took home gold in her fifth Olympics.
Oops! Now we know why she is leagues better. Or, at least part of the reason... PEDs, just announced.

oh wow i did not know this. But i just googled it after reading this @Greggor …. Now what?

We've seen southern hemisphere countries host the summer Olympics during their winter (Sydney, Australia 2000) but I don't think we've ever seen a southern hemisphere country host the winter Olympics during their summer 🤔

Oh i can’t help it. My favorite in the men’s ice skating is Canada’s Keegan Messing (and what a hassle he had getting there!). I also love that he wears plaid. I don’t care if he is on the podium (and it’s probably not likely), but he’s the only one of the men skaters that i want to rewind and watch again. And i do love an underdog.

Edited to add: i wrote that before watching Nathan Chen. Wow.

It is being investigated. The ROC could be stripped of the gold medal, only the skater with the infraction could be stripped of medal, the proverbial slap on the wrist (which may also be due to her being a minor).

I heard this news and my first thoughts were, surprise, surprise. Another Olympics and another Russian doping scandal. Supposedly the drug helps increase blood flow and endurance and can also treat migraines. Which you may have known when you did your Googling.

But congrats to Chen, Kim, and the US mixed arials team!

Yes Bruce i did start googling and read that about the advantage it gives for her heart flow. And you would think by now the Russians would not try to get away with this anymore.

Sometimes i wonder if we even need the Olympics. they have enough other national events. How much glory does one athlete need? It’s kind of like the actors too. We have the People’s Choice, and the Golden Globes and the Oscars. So much money that could be put to better use.

Beijing is nearly at the same north latitude as Denver.

Speaking of money, NASCAR spent around $1,000,000 to put in a race track inside the LA Coliseum that was removed after the race. Not only wasted money, but wasted resources.

I try not to watch NBC coverage if possible on Olympics. But last night, they spent about 30 minutes on Chen's win. I also hate the split screen for commercials...you can see the event, but you have no idea on who the athlete is nor from what country. Very annoying during the women's half-pipe. Needless to say, my Olympic watching has not been very much.

Mine too. I DVRd from Comcast and got so confused about what was what that i just started recording NBC. But i didn’t know they would prioritze the commercials so much that they preempted the actual events or split screen them. The least they could do was make the event screen the larger one. It was impossible to see who was who and i could only assume they did it on Non-American athletes. However, when I’m watching to be entertained and don’t care about the medals or even if they are American. Often i find myself rooting for the youngest Olympian (ok, with the exception now from that 15 year old Russian skater) who is competing for the first time. Don’t ask me names though, i can’t remember the athlete’s names, except for Nathan Chen.

Russia continuing to be Russia...

The reason they cannot display the Russian flag or play their national anthem if they win a gold medal is for this very reason…

I feel bad for the Russian athletes that are clean, but Russian athletes should not have been allowed to participate at all. Bogus to allow them to participate under the Russian Olympic Committee during this supposed ban. Originally, the ban was for 4 years, but after an appeal, it was reduced 2.
