SFR iPhone 14 will offer satellite connectivity for emergency location and communication...

Sorta fishing-related
I'm sticking with InReach. Very dependable rugged devices. Been using them for many years. When Garmin purchased DeLorme they improved an already great product.

...and they certainly can't read an open forum where you...ya know...spout off about the government...

LMFAO

Not trying to be a hater but I would never trust my safety to an apple product. As someone who works and plays outdoors in remote locales Apple has the distinction of being the most useless and hated devices in the lineup of copious devices possessed for off cell network navigation and communication. By far the least dependable and reliable. I would have a redundancy as a backup at a minimum. That goes for all devices really but seriously an apple device can't even communicate with my pc via cable. I have little hope they can actually transmit a life or death message out of view of the Starbucks wi-fi. Again just my experience with various devices speaking. Garmin is less than perfect but I would trust Garmin ten fold more to do a necessary job in time of need versus an apple product.

We have reason to believe, from satellite and cell tower triangulation, that the suspect failed to execute a complete stop at the intersection of USFS roads 3041 and 3052. All vacinity units are instructed to apprehend suspect. Confiscation of powerbaits has been authorized.

Your data is not being saved, nothing to suspect, carry on.

Apple makes a nice, feature-rich (if you need 50 cameras), exorbitantly-priced product. If nothing else, they've stayed consistent.

All joking aside, I really liked my iPhone 4s back in the day. Nice and small, did everything I needed it to.... But then, it became obsolete. I saw the way they were marketing "iPhone Forever," and I knew their game was to keep you on the hook forever. I decided to make the (slightly painful) transition at that point, and I've never looked back.

This sounds like a genuinely useful feature, but I guess I'll have to wait a little (not much) longer to be able to make emergency calls/texts from the middle of nowhere. Glad we're getting there, though. Should revolutionize search and rescue, which is a win for humanity!

I phone "driver safety sensors" indicate intoxication. Besides the people listening at the NSA have confirmed altered speech patterns. AI confirms slurred speech. Sending a unit to intercept....

You guys are hilarious. I am all for driving sober when there is an iPhone in the vehicle.

My brother taught me how to drive on gravel roads. He called it wildly careening practice. No alcohol involved, but good to practice sober before any real wildness.

I feel like I steered things off topic. In hopes of getting things on track and helping the op in a search for good of grid communication I offer the following devices and thoughts.

Garmin mini. The smallest reliable communication device. You will Bluetooth it to a smartphone for best results.

Garmin 66i. GPS and communicator in one. In fact I'll sell the mini if anyone is interested as I've replaced it with this device. Again not perfect. There is message delay. However messages like the mini are conveyed with location data. This is critical should the poop hit the blades. Again pair with smartphone for best results. Also comes with groovy mapping app that is equally frustrating and useful.

Spot. Limited experience but seem to do just fine based on others and their results. Similar bugs as Garmin.

Garmin interface is horrible. It's atari level German fare that is at once frustrating as well as effective. It does work. I would love and embrace an alternative if anyone has one.

I gave up on Garmin because of the clunky software. But I'm not really looking for a replacement, I just take my chances when off in the brush. Tell someone loosely where I'm going, do my best not to do anything stupid.
I'm old, and I like paper maps, compasses, looking at the lay of the land, and spending time apart from electronic gadgets. I like them but need a break frequently.

I just found my Garmin a few days ago in a box i was digging through and the batteries completely exploded and acid crystals are entcrusting the whole battery box. Maybe I can salvage, I liked the simplicity of the Garmin for my out and back mushroom excursions.

This doesn't sound like it is ready for Prime Time. Think digital camera in 1980 or CD player in 1983. It's a step in the right direction but let the early adopters take the hit while the technology is being fleshed out. In 5 years the first units will be fossils.

Dirt track racing is 1.50
Ehhhh, hard pass on that. Sprint cars have 850 horsepower in a car that only weighs 1400 lbs. There have to be easier and cheaper ways to help darwin along than putting drunks in them.

Here's your drunk racing option:

Nice and slow with crappy low powered cars.
