Garibaldi Tuna! - July 31

Got my boat out for the first run of the season today. Tired and lots to do still, so full report likely in a day or so after processing fish, cleaning the boat, etc etc.




Ended up with 26 before noon then stopped for a deep drop for bonus sable fish on the way in. Radio chatter and talking at port indicated most boats struggled today. I truly think the flies in the spread make a huge difference.



I also got my new custom glass 12wt @FlyHunt built for me good and bent today. I think it actually accounted for like 8 of the fish. Both on the troll and retrieving flies.




Geat times had by all.




Bonus stop on the way in for sablefish. Picked up 4 pretty quickly before heading in to port.

About time you put some real fairy wand #'s in the boat! What's the length on that stick?

Also how deep are you typically fishing blackcod? At some point I want to add a high-speed jig outfit to the arsenal that, properly lined, could double as a deep drop bottom fish rod.

Solid work as usual. Looks way more fun than building a garage.

The struggle stick is 7'6". I had him chop down the 8' blank.

Length is definitely over rated on boat fly rods. I've got a 12wt Loomis from @clarkman that I chopped down from 9 to 8'4"... well, technically, a tuna chopped it down when it was tip-wrapped. Fishes even better now.

800'? Nope, not cranking that.

Yeah, I've been searching for a long time to find the right rod for my fly polin, and finally got it. Took thinking "outside the box" a bit. Not sure why I didn't think of chopping one down sooner. But... I also never thought about shopping for blanks until this year either. Spent too much time trying to find a completed rod to order.

I wish I would have thought of chopping my Seele glass down before having it built up. Although, at 8'2", it's not terrible and is really more of a 14wt to begin with (it's got some serious junk in the trunk). The Steffen that I brought with me last year is more of a light 12wt and at 7'9", is a great length but I did feel like it was pushed near it's limit (not for breaking, just for landing fish super quick) on that trip.
