What have you done for your boat lately?

this reminds me of a halibut trip out of homer ak. on the way back to homer, the gal assistant started pulling fish out of the box, and fileting them on the back of the boat, on a pretty basic cutting board. i think she cut up 6+ fish.... have no idea how she didnt cut herself. and i didnt see any fancy gloves.
Mine mostly gets used for gutting and beheading tuna before going in the ice

You should see the Westport deckhands cark tuna in rough seas on the run back in. Very impressive no one has slit a throat or stabbed themselves, all the while 1000s of gallons of water dumping on them too boot!

Welp, just spent more on a butt rest than I ever thought I would. But (no pun intended) got a show special discount and am looking forward to planting my fat arse in this, especially in hot weather! Lots of really innovative products from this company, and all hand machined in a little shop in SLC. His nets and net systems are going to make other boat nets very meh...

This is a shop in Salt Lake ? If so I will have let my friend know , we both live just north of SLC .

This year I decided to do a couple things…

first, I put in a better floor at the bow so I could maybe take my aging dog along sometime.

IMG_9814.jpeg
Prolly have to do a couple runs on some local still water first to figure out a Dog Over Board drill cuz knowing her, she'll just jump out whenever she feels like it.

Second ( and more fun) I MacGyvered a removable casting brace for the back of the boat.

I wanted something that would:
-provide me with a little stand casting stability at the tiller area,
-still allow me to use the oars,
-be quick and easy to remove,
-and not be a trip hazard when not in place.

I also didn't want to spend a ton of loot.

So I found a $5 flat screen TV stand and a free back rest from a 70's era kitchen chair and went to town. (y)

IMG_9765.jpeg

First I removed the naugahyde & foam and then re-used the curved press board backrest support to come up with the thigh brace

IMG_9766.jpeg

IMG_9791.jpeg

IMG_9792.jpeg

Then I spent a while trying to figure out the quick release floor attachment.

After some lengthy boat and wood working porn deep dives I stumbled upon screw in wood inserts

IMG_9831.jpeg

and then I re worked some $1 ReStore levered knobs

IMG_9830.jpeg

and then cut and re stapled the foam cushion and naugahyde to make this beauty👇

IMG_9829.jpeg

and all for about $20 👍

…of course I’ll let y’all know if the lack of engineering or safety standards ends up being a factor and I end up in the drink 😎

That's probably my favorite quote from any book ever.

Pretty excited!
Decided to go electric. Outboards and I don’t seem to get along. I bought a used 3.5 hp rebuilt the carb and worked it over. First pull at home and it’s humming. No probs! Get on the lake, at the far end, in the rain, oh, and wind and I’m sweating thinking it won’t start. It’s heavy, well for me but it’s really light. The worst is having to refill in that pristine mountain lake. I try really really hard not to spill but….
Decided that the Newport NT-300 was lighter and would start when I wanted. At least in theory.
One reason for the Newport is that it does not require a proprietary battery. Any 36v lithium will work. Got a 50ah 36v for about $400. It has Bluetooth so state of charge, amp draw etc can be monitored real time on my phone.
Pretty excited!
Well first test run was not great. Motor kept kicking off when I got the throttle up a little over 50%. Called the battery manufacturer from the lake! Got tech support on the line right then and there! Offered a replacement after we discussed!
Pretty excited!
Went home and did some more research. Turns out the battery is fine - there was a connection issue from a battery box I was using. So both the battery and motor would work fine if I connected directly.
Gave it a test out at lake Crescent and the system wildly exceeded my expectations.
10ft Marlon
6+ mph
3.7 mi using ~35% battery
Calculations suggest 10mi range, significantly more at lower throttle.
Pretty excited
Heading up to BC next week, fingers crossed.

I took my boat out and tested the old carbureted Honda 9.9 for the season. It ran well. I also tried running an electric trolling motor off the transom for fishing. That also worked pretty well. I got a new 100AH lithium battery this winter and it sure is an upgrade from the heavy ass lead acid battery. All I needed was some big bass to hit the popper.

Nice someone else still using those old Pflueger reels. :) My first fly rod was a Fenwick FF856 I bought in the early 70's , I am pretty sure I had a Pflueger on it . Broke that rod in the 70's . Anyway not sure what become of the Pflueger . Here recently ran across a FF856 for sale that I bought , that appeared to have never been fished, if so not much . Serial # on the rod ,says it would have been made in either 1976-77 ,and also found a decent Pflueger 1495 to put on it . Looking forward to fishing that old fiberglass rod ,and Pflueger reel .

They’re like the Timex of fly reels.

That they are , I have an old 1492 bought new , and for the life of me I cannot remember what rod I had that on . 🥲 Too small for this Fenwick . It appears to have had very little use .

To add ,those are some very nice pictures you posted . (y)

This project started in November with the purchase of a new Bass Tracker 1436. Finished it about a month ago.
