What's in your vise?

we already beat you guys, what are we talking about?

Besides, that fly right there was incredibly carefully crafted for a friend....I wouldn't want to desecrate it by having it filled with tooth marks.

Honestly, now that I'm thinking about this....it would be kinda fun to try to tie one of these for every NFL team.

That's really sharp, but maybe a bit too much Broncoish in coloration right now?

Funny you should mention a tie for every team. I own Larry Nicholas's Pac 10 ten pack, a framed collection of ten flies with those school colors. Last time I saw him in Albany he said he was going to do a Pac 12 twelve pack. Don't know if he ever did. The flies in the collection are beautifully done and adorn the wall in my fly tying room

Besides the hackle which, honestly, I could have skipped, it’s a one-bird fly.

hook - WFC Model 6 #10
thread - SemperFli 8/0 brown
tail - hen pheasant tail
rib - small wire copper
body - hen pheasant tail
hackle - ginger (thorax only)
shoulder - hen pheasant body
collar - hen pheasant aftershaft (split-thread dubbed)

Regards,
Scott

I have to figure out (and try to master) your aftershaft split-thread dubbed collar treatment; it looks so good and I have to believe is magic in the water.

Here’s a sequence from a fly I tied a while back. For thread, I’d use something like Danville 6/0 or Semperfli 8/0; Uni 8/0 is a bitch to split and I hate UTC 70 - way too flossy (only exception is in Woodduck; absolutely love that color).

split thread, insert aftershaft feather, spin, moisten, stroke it back and wrap

Doing it in a thread loop works, too, but there’s much less buildup with the split-thread.

Hope this helps,
Scott

Here's my "Throw Back Thursday" fly this week. This pattern was developed by Al Prichard for the Kalama River. For many years Al owned a store on the Kalama, selling lunches, flies, lures, freely giving advice and a hot cup of coffee. Back in the day when I'd visit I never knew who might be there. Some of the legends Al knudson, Jim Teeny, Mike Kennedy Ralph Wahl and Harry Lemire would often stop in hang out warming their bones and be telling stories, good times. The store closed a few years back and looks kinda sad sitting there lost in time.
