PNW Flood Watch - Dec 8-12, 2025

What happens when flood guages get overcome and submerged? Like how do you measure that?
After the fact USGS measures the elevations of the high water marks left behind. From that they can make pretty good estimates of water volume and velocities. That gives the elevation above the gauge elevation. With velocity estimates a CFS (cubic feet per second) estimate can be made.

I had some whitewater kayak friends, even had a boat myself at one time. High water was our friend for sure. I did it for a few years, then transitioned into driving them up to the put in, fishing, then picking them up at the take out.
This I found preferable to bouncing my head off rocks while upside down in the river, as I never mastered the sport...
🤣😁

I'm more concerned about the Hwy 2 bridge than the humpkin run just now. The higher the water, the harder that debris pushes on those bridge pilings. That solo cherry picker ain't gonna' keep up. Yikes!
Well figures you'd be up for destroying the Humpkin run as well...
😉

There is no silver lining to this rain.

I was watching the Spokane news last night and the weather woman commented on the rain shadow effect of this series of storms on eastern Washington.

I was hoping that all this rain would recharge the fishing lakes in the eastern Washington. Most of area covered by the fishing lakes is still at normal precipitation or BELOW for December.

There is 2 excavators there in the video and sometimes they will have 3

Survival instincts are strong with this one. 😁

"Atmospheric river" sounds more dramatic, I guess.
I do still find myself saying "pineapple express" from time to time. But to be honest, after looking at the weather satellite images for these events, "atmospheric river" is actually a far more descriptive term.

Pineapple Express is still being used when the AR starts in Hawaii:

looks like Stevens Pass is gonna be closed a little longer than the weekend....damn!

I heard that Leavenworth is shut off on all access point. There are 4-5 primary roads that have fallen apart with the undermining.
