So I was correct about my SA Titan int-3-5. The area with the fine cracks has started to disintegrate, leaving some pretty big gaps with no coating. I’m going to try to keep fishing it until the end of the month because it casts so damn nice and is catching me a good amount of fish. Before I get a new one for next season has anyone tried this Orvis line? Hoping to find something that lasts me more than 2 months but that may be wishful thinking.

Yep! Love the line (it's also made by SA), but it's gonna sink way faster than your type 5.

Interesting! Good to know, thank you. I wouldn't mind having faster sinking line for a few beaches I fish. But I'm probably just going to get another Titan and pray

Way faster? I have no experience with it, but it says it’s a type 6 at the tip. So an I-3-6 vs an I-3-5?

I love the Arctic Silver intermediate for SRC. No more intermediate OBS’s for me for that fishery anyway. Still stuck with OBS I/3/5 for coho.

I get legitimately perplexed by some of the knots the OBS running line manages to work itself into. It’s like a magic trick.

Yeah, way faster. Pay more attention to the name " depth charge" rather than looking at whatever their claims of sink rate. It fished more like a type 9 I have for my 10wt.

Still a great line though.

How long has the OBS lasted you? With the rate I'm going through lines I could see myself tossing an OBS into the mix

It’s not great. I go through 1-2 per salmon season and always make sure I have 2 fairly new ones on hand to start a season. I will say Rio has been reasonable and has replaced multiple lines for me due to durability issues. I live with it because I have yet to find a comparable alternative though the Cortland Compact type 3 was close. I just find it to be the most efficient line off the beach for coho. It’s a clunky caster but with less false casting my fly is fishing more, which is important when a big part of the game is intercepting migrating fish.

Well I sent a email to Scientific Anglers to see if they will warranty my line, doubting they will as I’ve owned it for more then a year but never hurts to ask I’ve been eyeing this line in the Fast Int/S3 for about a year now and I found it in a few fly shops online for a little under $100. Welp, I've now joined the blown out Rio OBS club, and it only took about 10 days of use! Mine looks like that SA line pictured above. Hopefully I can get it replaced without too much trouble.

Get more bang for your buck fish obs heads over integrated lines. Also mono runner shoots farther. The bump head to runner can be smoothed out. You get used to the bump and don't even think about it. You can buy almost 2 heads for 1 integrated line. Mono runner does not really wear. Coated integrated runner section of an integrated line does wear.

I agree mono running lines shot well. I used to use them on some old shooting head setups.
With as much blind casting we do up here for coho and cutts, I’m not sure I’d enjoy stripping mono in all day. That’s just me though.

just my -2 cents. If you like an OBS head with mono try a Commando head. So easy to roll cast it out there with no need for back cast. Down side might not be best for spooky fish as they are not delicate. Not a fan of mono running lines as I always get fumble fingers.

Any thoughts on the suitability of the wulff bass taper dry line as an option?

Never tried the Wulff lines.
You might look at the Airflo 40+ Extreme if you are looking for an integrated line that doesn’t require a bunch of back casts.
SA Sonar Titan would be another option if they make it in a floater.

The hover / intermediate might be a good option for cutts provided it has good durability.

Hover/intermediate is my preferred setup for tidewater salmon as well. I have been using the H/I Outbound Short with the usual durability issues.

My mistake. It looks like they only make the hover / intermediate in a head, not the full line. The full line has a floating running line and a hover head. That would probably still work for cutts. I don’t think it would sink fast enough for salmon in strong currents. I’ve noticed the seatrout lines in general don’t tend to have a very aggressive sink rate. They seem to really like the 1” per second sink rate, likely due to the water they are fishing.

Interesting.... Head length looks to be identical to the OBS (9.3m = 30') but the weights are even heavier than the OBS. 247 grains for the 6 weight and 278 grains for the 7. (My notes say the OBS is 235 gr for the 6 and 265 gr for the 7).

You’d think Far Bank was not aware that they had a shit ton of “coastal saltwater fly fisher who fishes in the typically cooler conditions” right out their back door in Puget Sound. Why not offer it here as well?

My guess is it’s a rebranded OBS or Coastal Quick Shooter though I have not looked at the specs.

Stop with all the specialty lines that are marketing gimmicks Rio. How about having folks who actually fish, test materials for durability and performance to find the right mix of both.

Nope, that would take effort that’s not needed when schmucks like me will buy 4 OBS’s per year for salmon due to durability issues and because nobody has really competed with them in that space in the last decade. At least when it comes to efficiently fishing (not necessarily effectively) that fishery.

If I had Elon Musks money I’d spend 2/3rds of it developing great fly lines. That and breathable waders that don’t prematurely leak. None of that trying rule the world shit .
