Small creeks

I am living vicariously through these reports, thank you for these posts. These are the kinds of waters I like to fish. I just realized that as of today I have been working 19 straight days without a day off. All work and no play makes Zak a dull boy!

Checked off my small stream adventures yesterday. Didn't get the chance to fish over the holiday weekend due to my partner getting sick for the whole 3 days. Knowing that some of the systems close on the 10th, I took the day off of work yesterday (cough cough) to explore some of my favorite spots off HWY 2 before they close :(. The decision to call in did not disappoint. Fished a total of 4 spots and landed around 25 to net. The heat kicked in after 4 hours of fishing and I had to call it. Most of the fish were in the 8"-10" range with the last of the day coming in around 14". Just sad that the season is so short (again). Back to SRCs.

Elk hair caddis was the fly of choice.

Great stuff and pretty fish!
I actually forgot about the early closure date up there this year. DOH!

Got out to a local w/ my boy. Told ya, he just walks right up and starts casting where he should be fishing. Drives me nuts.

I have been all over the place chasing other stuff since the opener, but I should get back out to my local "crick" soon, to see if it's any better than it was opening weekend. I'm really looking forward to bringing one (light) rod with a floating line and one box of flies out fishing very soon. Thanks for the inspiration, all.

@mcswny and I went exploring. Fully OMJ style, based on what we now call “remote sensing” only. ‘Cept I actually brought along a good ol’ DeLorme.
We found a dead end or two but also fish and identified a whole buncha new stream miles to explore in the future.
It got hot. The first place we went, the water was 56 around noon and 58 around 3pm. We went swimming. Took my breath away a bit and reminded me I’m still alive. Just like Eddie Vedder said.

I gotta be honest. I wasn’t super impressed with the first 1/2 to 3/4 mile of the first spot. We tried to get up higher on that creek but it was all gorged out and too hard to access from above. So we walked in from the bridge down low and the habitat down there was rather simplified with huge stretches of exposed, shallow riffles unlikely to hold fish bigger than fry. (Which, we saw a lot of RBT fry.) But once we got up around the corner and into the lower end of that gorge, there were lots more fishy hides-holes, and, mercifully for us and the fish, more shade.

Now I feel like you and I should go and build the 3rd leg of the triangle 😂
