Tell Me It's April 1st

I was walking down the street in New York City this week and I saw a guy wearing a fishing vest as streetwear and I thought to myself “damn, that looks like a useful piece of clothing in the city and I’m over here with pockets stuffed to the gills with snacks, wallet, phone, camera, and keys.”

literally nothing is exempt from the endless fukkery
So very true. This Nike, Drake, Nocta, Abel collaboration just might enshrine the end of what once was fly fishing. The very essence of fly fishing is being a niche activity. It's not for every-fukin'-body. Thankfully, flyfishing is the antithesis of capitalism's perpetual growth-or-die business model. I appreciate that flyfishing, at its core, recognizes that endless greed for growth is unsustainable. I appreciate G smolt but disagree with his contention that "Flyfishing needs a more diversified audience/consumer base." Flyfishing doesn't need "more." Flyfishing businesses "need" more because that is the capitalist business model, even if it leads to the demise of flyfishing.

Fly fishing exists on a finite and shrinking base of resources that is mutually exclusive of infinite growth. Adding some new blood to the ". . . old grumpy white guys . . ." set won't hurt, but a Madison Avenue approach will. Milton Friedmann's Harvard Business School model is exactly what can kill flyfishing. I won't shed a tear when Nocta crashes and burns in short order.

Far more noted "celebrities" of various ethnicity than this fashionable idiot have been, and are, avid fly fishers. The majority of them came to the sport of fishing, in general, long before they gained notoriety.

All this current fashion trend is designed to do is separate people from their money in the name of belonging. At worst this will just add more un recyclable mass to our waste dumps and land fills.

In the mean time, would it really hurt us as sportsmen to reach out and welcome all walks of life, using it as a teaching medium for conservation that everyone can understand ?

Two of my favorite musicians are avid fishers. Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden (just saw him play on Wednesday in Tacoma!) and Les Claypool of Primus.

I'd get an Iron Maiden co-lab fly fishing kit... but I'm already invested in the lifestyle.

My final comment...people of all ethnicities pretty much share similar recreational aspirations (in most instances heavily influenced by location) once they acquire the financial means to do so.

The fundamental key is expanding much greater access to a more affluent middle class income so those recreational interests can be acted upon. Sufficient discretionary disposable income is crucial.

Personally...I'd be happy to see grumpy old folk of all ethnicities and genders flailing away on flyfishing waters.

Abel had Grateful Dead themed reels as I recall...
Not sure I really remember though, having been to a few Dead shows.
;)

My daughter, who is into Drake, showed me this cover yesterday...

I'm waiting for Snoop's Patagonia line to come out...with a waterproof doobie pocket...
I love the Doobie Brothers! Are they coming out with a line, too? Old Black Water, keep on rolling...
Oh wait, nevermind!
I've got some patagucci waders and they pretty much already have that pocket.

I was momentarily confused by the cover, wondering why this dude that looks like Drake was awkwardly standing in a stream in a pretty crappy photo, then I realized it was Drake, had to pause again, and THEN I got it!

I have enjoyed fly fishing for decades. I have always tried to help the 'young ones' get into it and become better fly fishers. I have not seen an increase of a lot of crowds of people fishing where I go. So I welcome any and all new people to the sport.

We need people to spend money to keep our retail establishments, guides, and manufactures in business. While I do not spend a lot of my money on fly fishing stuff, I do try to always spend some at the local small businesses near where I go fish. IMHO, every little bit helps them. I do not spend lavishly on very much. I do not care if others do. As long as I am alive and enjoying life, especially fishing, I am a happy camper.

One of my friends was a guide in Montana. He looked forward to those well-heeled East Coasters booking a trip with him. They fly in, spend bookoo bucks buying all new gear and clothes at a local business, go out fishing, give him a big tip, give him all those clothes and gear at the end of the trip, and then they fly out of town. Without them, he could not of made ends meet.

I’m all for keeping the industry well employed…and always keep it in mind whenever I travel to fish…
