Popper action!!

I'm a huge fan of bluegill on poppers. Tons of fun on a light rod.

I use the triangle bug popper pattern because it seems to get hooked deep a lot less often. Bigger gills seem to be able to inhale those mini poppers more often than I'd like.

I’m on a new mission……so many local lakes that suck for trout fishing right now with zero pressure are prime targets for me and my poppers!! The lily pads are lush patches of cover along with docks…..let the games begin! Heading out now……

Talk about a No popper action lake today……way to perfect, circled with tons of lily pads, downed trees…..one little bass and a couple of other hits. Only good thing caught today was some sunshine and a buzz! Different lake tomorrow…..

Well crap…..just when I thought I kinda had it dialed in…..the fish gods crapped on me! 💩 Went back today to a local lake where I lost count of popper fish last Friday….easy to count today’s fish….5?! The same areas that were full of fish weren’t……only bass today. Not sure what to think except I’m fishing for trout next!!

With the exception of frogs and stuff you fish in heavy cover, topwaters only work well on the days they work, but they work really well at those times and are a blast! It seems like cloudy mornings are best in general, but it's always the first thing I try when warmwater fishing. You usually find out pretty quick whether they're gonna work or not.

We’ll have to popper/panfish sometime! It seems opposite for me, sunny calm days are better topwater action so far. Yesterday was cloudy with no action, so who knows?? Only the fish know. I don’t cast these into heavy cover, besides not having a weed guard, I fish light bamboo/tippet.

You sore-mouthed 'em all on Friday, obviously.

Right on!

Yup. Heavy cover is for the dirtbag gear. I never fish it either. I stay as close to the edges as I can. I also fish dangerously close to any structure; the bass love downed trees around here.

Most of my recent bass fishing has been in Florida, and the only pattern I've identified for sure is that dropping pressure makes them go on the bite, big time. Generally speaking, there was a topwater window most mornings, before the sun got high on the water. On cloudy days, it would sometimes go all morning. I had days where I expected a hot bite and got skunked, and I had days where I expected them to be put down and they ate gurglers like crazy. Other days, they wouldn't look up at all, but a clouser would get eaten regularly. They're every bit as temperamental as trout in lakes, so it's usually good to have a backup plan. I think the new hat can only help.
