Tuna 2024

Getting increasingly bummed out at our weather forecasts. September is my favorite month for tuna, and weather days for a boat like mine are looking very unlikely for at least the next 10 days :(

dumb question. What’s a flat fall?
A stupid easy, and stupid effective way to put tuna in the boat. Maybe not the most exciting, but can come in handy if they are staying deep. Flat sides are more exciting but require a lot of effort and technique to work them. The strikes are bone jarring. The other jig category is "surface iron". These are smaller, slimmer and meant for casting. A popular model for this is the Shimano Colt Sniper. I really want to get a quality "gun rod" spin outfit specifically for this. Seeing a jumper patch just out of fly range is almost unbearable.

Yeah, surface iron is where it's at. Coltsnipers are what got me in to it and have definitely put the most fish in my boat, but I'm using more Mustad Zippy jigs lately. One issue with the Coltsniper is they tend to foul on themselves a lot, especially if you swap out the crappy treble hooks with single point assist hooks. But, both jigs are always rigged up on my boat at all times.

Now that I think about it, I have an old, heavy bamboo trolling rod. Might just need to do some work on it in the off season for next year.

Right behind you on Thursday. Go find em for us please!
And I’m with Silverfly so the boat has three of the main crew. By that I mean 3 of us that have been chasing albacore on the fly for I think it’s 9 years now. Please help me with that Cabezon.

That sounds like an awesome group to go with. How do I get on the waitlist for next year?

Yes, it is you (@Bagman), @SilverFly, @SteelHeadDave, and me on Thursday, and you, @SilverFly, @Buzzy, and me on Saturday. According to my trip reports, I think that we have been fishing (or at least attempting) at least one day a season for albacore since a weekend in Garibaldi in October, 2019 (which also included @alpinetrout).

That was also the trip where we just loaded up with Dungeness crab too.

No problem, I can add you to my spreadsheet and include you in the general call for interest in early January. [Actually, it looks like you are already on my spreadsheet. So look for a PM from me in January...]

So are swimbaits just for ding dongs? Because I think casting shit at tuna or where tuna might be is pretty fun. And I’ve caught some doing that with swim baits and I didn’t hate it, I gotta admit.

Swimbaits work too, but I find them say more effective on the troll than casting. My move with them typically is to have one way back in the troll spread and to just let it hang on stops. I've caught most my swimbait fish on my boat doing that.

Casting swim baits can be super effective. Used to have people do this a fair amount back when I used to have a swimmer in the troll spread most of the time. Very effective working them in on the slide as well, after another lure gets bit on the troll.

My only issue with swim baits, and the reason why I don't fish them really anymore, is that they lose more fish than any other lure I've ever used. I've always attributed to that weighted head. When albacore are whipping their head around that weighted head has a tendency to flop back and forth and can really work a hook out. I hate losing albacore on charters, so I kinda went away from that. Especially with people who don't land them quickly, they have a bad habit of working themselves out of the fishes face.

Steve'll be backzxz
I'm excited to try out this new and very exciting fishery; and to be part of this astute group! Ditto on the spreadsheet! As Arnold said "I'll be back"!
