Productive morning at Mountain Rest Lake

Super fun. Can’t you tell?
So in South Cackalackee they call redear sunfish “shellcrackers.” They have pharyngeal “teeth” that they can use to crush invertebrates with tougher exoskeletons. This is a shellcracker:
And this is a bluegill:
Some of the ones I caught and pictured may be hybrids. But the shellcracker have a pointier face and the bluegill get that saucer shape to them, not to mention some usual color differences and the red edge on the shellcracker’s gill plate spot.
In prior trips I’ve caught more BG than SC. This time, mostly bass with some nice SC and a few BG. The biggest bass so far this trip have been about 15” and 2 lbs. But there have been kind of a lot of them so it has been fun. Take this fun size popper eater for example:

My good luck fishing partner has plenty of patience in warm weather when fishing is good. She didn’t want to fish or reel them in but she did want to touch them all.

One more—we call this spot “pirate’s cove.” I can hook fish in here, after I figure out the casting puzzle, but landing them is another story. Doesn’t mean I don’t always try.
Oh and I had two, count ‘em, two @Tom Butler doubles today. The first was two large bluegill; the second was two bass. The two large bluegill had the six weight majorly bending!
