Shops newsletters, reports and... hotspotting?

With the advent of the internet "Figure It Out Yourself" went down the toilet long ago and will only get worse.
Sadly, it's much easier to prostitute our fisheries for personal gain than working a real job.:(
Those folks definitely blow the river out and make it too much of a hand to hand [combat] job. In worst case scenarios they absolutely f*** it.

Agree with @mcswny on all of this. It can feel a bit like gate keeping, but I think you have that right if you put in the work to explore those blue lines on your own. These are small creeks, and simply can’t handle the potential amount of people and pressure being led to them.

OMJ rules!

We need to learn through trial and error.

We need to learn how to solve problems and not have it handed on a 'golden platter'.

We need to understand that once posted it will exist forever.

Pay your dues, appreciate when you learn something, keep your info private and only share with those you trust (which means almost no one).

Great conversation to have amongst ourselves, but is anyone going to express these feelings with the shop? That it might be in their best interest to incentivize people to actually COME IN for info vs just blasting it to them in an email and getting nothing out of it? These guys are new to the fly shop business. My guess is they haven't quite dialed in the standard operating procedures.

Evan, that’s my plan for today.

I’m working on an email. Just trying to find the right tone so they’ll actually listen.

It’s not that they don’t know. The new owners are long time fly fishers and have been through the hotspotting wars before. One of their guides also has a reputation for poor on the water.

That's an understatement if you partake in certain fisheries and hear the chatter surrounding them.
I do, and I do, and it is, but I didn’t want to hijack the original rant. One thing at a time.

Was hoping it to be more conversation than rant, but I accept it if it came off as a rant.
No, you’re right. This has been a good conversation.

You know it's bad when I have multiple friends who don't even know each other say things like "WOW! Did you get a permission slip from (guide) before going out there!?"
I think he likes having people there, so he can pole on over when he sees you catching fish.

I thought it stopped at holding court and passing judgment around here. What are you trying to start, Evan?

Truth be told, I've never had such a problem as I 1. have other spots, and 2. we don't seem to be out there on the same days. So I mostly get hit with the gossip more than actual on the water drama.

Exhibit 32 in Phil’s case for a boat.

So with all this being said, If anyone here is familiar with this situation and feels strongly enough--email them. Or go in and talk to them. I'd just suggest doing it with level head as hopefully that will be at least heard. Maybe if they get enough people emailing them, they'll think twice next week 🤷‍♂️.
