Lake Fishing Etiquette or Lack Thereof

Is the nickname for Drano Lake the toilet bowl?
Just that spot located inside the bridge. Boats troll in a tight circle inside the entrance to Drano trying to pick off new fish as they arrive and haven't yet been spooked by all the boat traffic. I fished with a guide there one time to check it out. Boats were spaced barely a boat length apart as they trolled around in that circle. I think all those boats going in a circle creates a current kinda' like a toilet being flushed.

I am thinking of starting a new fly club... "Low hol'in and Troll'in Club"... 😄

What about this riddle, I or you are the first person on the lake, pick a spot to anchor up and fish do I have to move if you want to troll where I am fishing? Or do I need to pull anchor and move? Or I have anchored and moved several times now and catching well and your having a slow day so I need to move so you might catch some fish?

What about this rule... you are trolling or anchored in a spot or area and haven't caught anything after 15-25 minutes and I was lighting them up in this spot yesterday, should you have to give the spot up so I can catch some fish, some your probably fishing it wrong? 😄

Just me and my gas can and matches....

I just try and enjoy every blessed day...

"Hey am I fishing to close?"
On the lower Columbia there is a very specific etiquette regarding trolling and anchor fishing. There are "usual and accustomed" anchor and trolling locations. And if you anchor in a trolling lane, you will have trollers going by you just barely far enough away to avoid tangling lines. It's not that they care about the anchored fisherman. They just don't want to waste their time with untangling fishing lines.

Been there done that! I deck hands for a friend and we have been rodtip close, with "unfamiliar" guys getting mad, and usually other guy are screaming at them!

My reference was for smaller lakes. I actually asked s guy that trolled by me, in "casting zone", where do I get to anchor? He didn't answer but then didn't troll by me any more.

One of my favorite line is "I guess this float tube, pontoon boat need to come with rear view mirrors." Haha

I have used and still use tube and raft crafts.

All I fish are small trout lakes. I have been rammed by flyfishers in inflatables and have rammed inflatables and the shore when trolling backwards (the best way to troll in a Hobie kayak).

Yes...it's about as dangerous as falling into a tub full of kittens.

I do occasionally wear one of those little bicycle mirrors on my cap bill to avoid such incidents.

Here’s a tactic for when someone gets too close. I just turn your back on them, clip your fly off and start making hero casts in the opposite direction. The whip crack at the end of the back cast happening right next to their hat should be enough to get them to back off… at high speed ;)

I’d rather have a lake to myself but I don’t mind a few other people fishing. It just sucks when they think it’s kosher to anchor 40 or 50 feet from me

Ain’t fucking kosher man

So, if my math is somewhat correct, if you can anchor and cast 50 feet in each direction, then you need 100 feet times 100 feet or 10,000 square feet around you. (I'm not doing circle calculations in my head.) There is 43,560 sq ft in an acre, so it takes an acre of lake size for just 4 fisherman to anchor and fish. Not sure we are all going to fit on most of the popular lakes. Especially if it is true that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water.

I require a half acre. I like a big room.

Circle area = π × r² = π × 2,500 ft² ≈ 7,854 ft²

Casting from a fixed point 50' in all directions yields a circle, not a square...So instead of 43k, we have 7.8k..allowing for a 5 plus fold increase in anglers, and the associated potential for conflict.

Apparently stillwater fishing should require assigned seating, maximum occupancy, and reservations. Ticketmaster?

Maybe add a service fee...one equal to the value of the gear you use that day.
:)

In my previous life as a bass fisherman, there was definitely a code of conduct. I have seen it enforced on the water a few times. It can get ugly if the person being reprimanded doesn’t understand what’s going on.

In tournament fishing there were actual rules around these things. I think 100’ was the rule but there were “community” holes where the tournament director would tell us in advance (at the driver’s meeting) that he wouldn’t entertain a protest from those areas.

I grew so accustomed to fishing around lots of other boats in tournaments that it just doesn’t bother me on a lake…unless someone does something dangerous. That said, now that I’m back into fly fishing I have no use for lakes.

That’s like way wrong, with squares I had each angler needing 10,000 sq ft, you got 7854 sq ft per angler. 43k is sq ft per acre so 5 anglers instead of 6 per acre. But, if we all have circles around us, we can’t use all available square footage on the water without overlapping. So please don’t follow Mossback for more math tips. But I do fear your powerful emojis. 😁

I used to enjoy setting up the hog line off Cinder Hill at East Lake.

My use of multiple emojis wasn't enough to convey my deliberately sarcastic intent to mislead I see...
I'll endeavor to use new, and yet even more powerful emojis...
😁💀🤣🚯

What do you all do when your fishing a lake and someone pulls up 50 feet from you and starts fishing the same water you are?

What are your thoughts? Should i politely say "hey, how you doin, your too close, please move further away from me"?

Be super friendly, chat them up non-stop, talk about every twitch and grab, the moon phases, how your red rib is better than a copper rib, talk about your boats chines, the shape of your anchor, how you had to change out the brushes on your trolling motor, the color of the underside of the bill of your cap, etc. etc. they'll either get as far away from the crazy guy as they can or go bat shit crazy.

Everybody knows the grid spacing for one angler per acre is 208 feet. One angler per 3/4 acre is 180.
