All excellent points made. Is it possible that Putin at 69 years of age wants to make his mark in history? Capitalizing on USA political dysfunction?

His threats are ominous though. Let history not repeats itself. What his is end game? Vladimir the Great?

One thing this does affirm; any nation state pursuaded to give up their nuclear weapons (despite any degree of well-intentioned promises) would be foolish to do so.

North Korea is certainly watching this spectacle.
as is the CCP…

Maybe his prostatitis and erectile dysfunction have left him irritable.

Being an old fart myself, and knowing plenty of old farts....I don't know any that aren't cranky about something....and it's rather fortunate that none of us have nuclear weapons.

you must not have seen the batch of posts I deleted :D

But really, it's going well. Thanks everyone!
The idea that there would be any divide on this topic is a sad statement on the state of affairs in the US these days. I’m glad to see there is virtually nothing in the way of sympathy being expressed towards Russia’s actions on this thread, unlike some well known talking heads and pols in this country. It’s damn obvious what’s right and wrong about this situation but I’ll be damned that some people can’t seem to figure that out. My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine and those of you who have personal connections to Ukraine. I can only hope that f$@%wad Putin and the rest of his inner circle eventually catch the Russian flu (or better yet, meet the same fate as Mussolini).

We are the North Sentinal Island of the universe...
I think the difference is that they embrace and even enforce their isolation. We instead send signals into space saying 'we're great, here we are!'...

'Hmm, checked you out, not so great, evolve, grow up.'

Vlad couldn't get it up, got laughed at by a hooker and invaded a country...

I realize the situation with regards to Ukraine has been in the news a lot. I did not pay very much attention to it. I should of...

But at no time did I think we would be watching history being made in front of our eyes. NATO came together and performed with a single voice (for the most part). Numerous countries came together within hours of the war and provided a consistent message - this is wrong! Countries aligned with Russia are now saying no to helping Russia and Putin in the war effort. Russia is methodically becoming isolated from the world. And now Putin has been personally sanctioned. He now joins the ranks/dregs of Gaddafi, Noriega, Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin, and Benito Mussolini within a day or two on the war on Ukraine...

Is this the equivalent of the Berlin Wall coming down? Will there be a 'new world order'? Only time will tell.

My hopes and prayers go out to all Ukrainians who need help now. Also to extended family and friends. They are in the middle of this historic time living it minute to minute. But they are all alone! It should not be this way. I hope there is a way help and support can be found - they truly deserve it...

I found this article to be informative

Here is a highlight

Fallacy #1: Ukraine is “Little Russia,” a spin-off of the original—...

If anything, it’s the other way around. As Rud writes in his superb 2014 piece “Russia’s War on Ukraine,” published in Accuracy in Media, Ukraine
is the land, wrote English historian Norman Davies, through which most peoples passed on their way to settle the rest of Europe, and to become the nations and countries that we know today.
In the Middle Ages, the Kyivan Rus’ (not Kyivan “Russia”—more below) Imperial Dynasty was the largest political entity in Europe. Following Kyiv’s adoption of Christianity from Byzantium, the precursor of modern Ukraine became a powerhouse of intellectual discourse, religion, and cultural life. In its size, grandeur and advancement of education (mandatory for women), in its equal rights for women, in the arts and the sciences, Kyiv eclipsed other European cities such as Paris and London. European kings and the English monarchy married into the Kyivan Dynasty. Among them, King Henry I of France married Princess Anna of Kyiv; she signed her name to the marriage document, he used an “X”….
“Russia” at that time did not exist, and had as its antecedents Finno-Ugric tribes that separately evolved into scattered principalities in the north that rejected Kyiv’s dominion. Most telling was their sacking and rejection of Kyiv in 1169 that was not matched until the city’s destruction by the Mongol Horde a hundred years later. The Kyivan Rus’ Empire collapsed with the latter onslaught, but in the process shielded the rest of Europe from the same fate.
In other words, the political and cultural seat of power in Europe transferred from Rome to Constantinople to Kyiv, before migrating West. Moscow was never more than an outpost, lagging behind, struggling to keep pace with its more accomplished neighbors.

Fallacy #2: The name “Russia” derives from the “Rus’” peoples of Kyiv.

If the names are similar, it’s to intentionally confuse everyone. Until the reign of Ivan the Terrible in the late sixteenth century, what we now call Russia was known as “Muscovy.” Different place, different history, different people, different culture. The early tsars appropriated the “Rus’” name, hoping to doll up their ho-hum pedigree

Btw, that article was published in May 2021.

Continuing...

Fallacy #3: Ukraine was historically a territory of Russia.

Nyet. In the days after the Kyivan Rus’ fell to the Mongols, Ukraine was for half a millennium part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Russia had no dominion over Ukraine for most of recorded history. Ukraine is no more a part of Russia than Normandy is a part of Great Britain

Looks like my uncles and cousins have been given a draft notice in Zaporozhye Oblast. My uncles are 58, and 56.

God protect them in this terrible time.
