Republican Debate

Some Margaret Thatcher quotes:

"If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman."

"Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the high road to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction."

"I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left."

"I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end."

I consume a steady diet of political news and commentary from other sources. This site is a welcome break from that. If I had my druthers, there would be no discussion of national elections on this site. No offense to you good folks, but I'm not really interested in your political opinions (possibly excepting political issues that directly affect fish and fishing). I think political discussions here will just build a wall between me and people who I could otherwise have fun and interesting interactions with about fishing.
Hmmm, I am not sure that's true for me. For example. I have a better view of Jared right now than I did 2 hours ago. Not that I had any sort of bad view of him but being a progressive and tolerant of my views makes me think positively about him and that I think is positive for the community.
However I think in depth discussion about specific issues is not the best for our passionate community.

Edited so as to not jump the gun, before mods chime in.

Are we able to talk about this?

I’m a progressive and I found it very interesting. Notably, that I was easily able to find significant common ground with half of the people on stage, which would seem unfathomable in our current climate. I know there are more than a few people here that would be very interested in being exposed to other people’s thoughts on the matter. We have a uniquely diverse group here. The thread will inevitably die, as always, but the cool headed folks will gain a lot of value from it before that. The mods have allowed it in the past.

Keep in mind, this was a republican debate. This thread doesn’t need to turn into a red vs. blue shit show.
I saw your post before your edit, there was a candidate that checked your boxes, but he didn't make it past the primary in 2016 and 2020.

I can't see anyone other than He Who Shall Not Be Named as the GOP candidate. Even with all that is going on in various courts, he absolutely crushes everyone else in polling.

Haley did quote MT (the first one) last night...

Who’s that candidate? It doesn’t surprise me that someone with an interest in fixing the system wouldn’t make any progress; the entire establishment are against them. Someone like that could succeed with a massive, self-funded, campaign. However, people with those kinds of resources tend to benefit from the establishment. I think the only hope is a grass roots campaign that goes viral and is fully supported by small donors.

There is a very real possibility that he who shall not be named will be ineligible. The evidence that has started surfacing makes it seem more likely than not, to me. Asa Hutchinson spoke about it, at the debate. My bet is that he does become ineligible and Vivek becomes the GOP candidate.

Basically no one stood out to distance themselves from the others…and several underperformed when they had an opportunity to not to.

I disagree. I expected a stage of people pandering to a particular base. I was surprised to see half of them not go down that path. The differences between some of the candidates were significant, to me.

I’m a fiscally conservative, socially liberal moderate…probably a unicorn these days…

I disagree about that, too. I believe there is no shortage of people that fit that profile, in this country. The problem is that the system doesn’t allow them to have adequate representation.

Admin note:

So far so good, but we've never seen certain topics do anything but devolve in to something that causes people to leave the site a few pages in. If we can keep it level-headed and civil, we'll let it go for a bit. The Bud Light / Kid Rock thread went better than expected.

Just as a note from us on some things: Not everything has to be discussed everywhere. Sometimes, having one place we can get away from the political stuff that has taken over every other media outlet we have is kinda nice. So keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks guys

Man’s a discussion board savant
Thank you

I would pin the tail on the map to determine the next president.
The state university closest on the map is the pool of candidates. Interview the professors/faculty and choose the next president.

Also

I would vote for anybody, that will give term limits to all politicians.

If i was to choose from last nite, and from what little i know about the bunch.

Asa Hutchinson.

Look, I swing pretty hard to the left, and I know a lot of you are on the other end of the spectrum. I like this community because we, for the most part, leave our politics at the door and just talk fishing. I'd sure like to keep it that way.

For people that want to know more go search for a recent article by J. Michael Luttig and Laurence Tribe

I often support candidates from either party but steer well clear of candidates that appear to really, really, really want the job and choose to support those who come off as wanting to do the job regardless which direction the political wind is blowing. I wish there were more of that ilk. I believe I witnessed both elements last night but, unfortunately, more of the former and less of the latter.

Haley came across well, stepped up to the plate with reasonable positions on hot issues the others ducked, viewed her as winning the night.
Pence's stand on the Constitution was highly admirable, his religious intensity polarizing
Asa came across as reasonable and experienced, someone who is about getting the job done.
De Santis continues to prove he is merely an empty shirt of bluster and anti-woke phrasing.
Vivek could not have been more snarky or demeaning, needs to back off the Ritalin.
Scott was an unipressive yawn, Christie predictably pugnacious.

what a bizarre election cycle this wil be...

Just the opposite here.
I don’t have any other social media other than fishing sites. I don’t frequent here much because threads often get shut down if someone disagrees with the popular opinion. I think it would be great if their was a place to discuss politics before fishing gets shut down completely.

This is my only social media, too, except for lurking and never posting on twitter. My "steady diet" comes from the news.

Shutting it down has nothing to do with popular opinion - it has to do with the devolvement in to the same "us vs them" thing that is everywhere else - a LOT of which gets sent straight to our admin private messages... and we just don't want to deal with it - especially when we lose members every single time these threads devolve like that. Just very little incentive for us to let them happen.
