Republican Debate

Edited so as to not jump the gun, before mods chime in.

Are we able to talk about this?

I’m a progressive and I found it very interesting. Notably, that I was easily able to find significant common ground with half of the people on stage, which would seem unfathomable in our current climate. I know there are more than a few people here that would be very interested in being exposed to other people’s thoughts on the matter. We have a uniquely diverse group here. The thread will inevitably die, as always, but the cool headed folks will gain a lot of value from it before that. The mods have allowed it in the past.

Keep in mind, this was a republican debate. This thread doesn’t need to turn into a red vs. blue shit show.

I tied flies and listened to classic rock rather than listening to the debate.

I do not talk politics or religion at a bar. I also do not even consider talking about them on a fly fishing site.

I go fishing and come here to get away from it all.

Trying to figure out how to respond to this and maybe I just shouldn't.

I guess I'll say it this way. I was a progressive as a few here may be able attest too. I was an extreme environmentalist. Close all the hatcheries, stop all logging, and mining regardless of the consequences to the economy. That kind of thing... The lies I told about Bush 2 I am deeply ashamed of. Not because I think he was somehow a great president but because I said things about him out of my own anger. Things I had no way of knowing were true, but that I heard some place.
I am not a progressive any more, mostly because I hate being told how to live and I'm sorry but that is all I see from progressives.
Not with bad intentions, just they want the world to be a certain way and it's not so they seek change. The problem is half the country or more doesn't want those changes and thus it becomes tyrannical.
That is what I hate about how I used to be.
For me? I am opposed to ALL new laws, I am opposed to ALL tax and government service fee increases and opposed to everything that gives government more power.. I will vote for the candidate that convinces me that they are the closest to my views regardless of how they identify themselves politically. D R I. Doesn't matter. What's best for me is to keep the money I earn and keep the government out of my life as much as possible.

I hope I have written this tactfully. If not tell me to delete it and I will.

I missed it. I would be nice if we could talk about it. No need to convince anyone that my, or your, or their opinion is the right one. just talk about what happened. That seems to be the problem today, is no one can differ without being challenged. I can tell you I'm different than a progressive and a conservative, but like parts of both philosophies. That said, there is nothing I hate worse than a conversation about politics without the respect everyone deserves regarding their own beliefs and preferences.

Basically no one stood out to distance themselves from the others…and several underperformed when they had an opportunity to not to.

I’m a fiscally conservative, socially liberal moderate…probably a unicorn these days…

I am fiscally out of shape and socially irresponsible. I am probably a unicorn too...

So far there is no real good candidates on either side.

I like CC as he full on hammers DT and doesn't fall in line like the rest of the spinless GOP minions, but don't think he will go far.

I would like to see Michelle Oboma and Liz Cheney be the nominations for D and R

I consume a steady diet of political news and commentary from other sources. This site is a welcome break from that. If I had my druthers, there would be no discussion of national elections on this site. No offense to you good folks, but I'm not really interested in your political opinions (possibly excepting political issues that directly affect fish and fishing). I think political discussions here will just build a wall between me and people who I could otherwise have fun and interesting interactions with about fishing.

Of course you found common ground watching the debate they are all paid by the same people that own half of everything, they are all on the same page, it's only the people that are red vs blue, by design

It would be great o be able to discuss things as a nation or even a BB. It seems rare these days to be able to do that. We have more in common than we have differences. It's logical that a nation as diverse and large as the US would have awide spectrum of political beliefs. It could and should be a strength of our nation. More and more we seem to argue about things that aren't really the purview of government anyway.
We split ourselves up based on many of those issues and then watch media sources that reinforce what we would like to believe and demonize those that see it differently. The end result is that we can't even agree on what is factual anymore. Strongly held beliefs become synonomous with fact and there is no way that we are willing to absorb new information.
I suspect that this thread will remain civil. The members here have been careful recently to be civil in the face of disagreements. I wish the whole state adn country were as willing as this site generally is to be civil.

While both of the people you mentioned would be far better candidates than the current field (both sides), I'd prefer to remove the Theory of Relativity from politics altogether. No more Bushes, Clintons, Obamas, Trumps, etc. They've had their time. Lets get some new players on the field.
