Works for me! Feels a hell of a lot steadier by myself than with another big dude up front, but it’s harder to net fish and a lot harder carrying that 85 lb sum bitch back up from the water.

Good to know. I appreciate the info. My canoe probably weighs about the same. Definitely would suck carrying it back to the car.
The weight is somewhat mitigated by the satisfaction of not being anything close to shoulder to shoulder with other fishers, especially if there’s a fish or two in the box.
I bet it is a similar satisfaction to being the only flyfisher in a group of gear fishers and being the only one to catch a fish.
Do you find the current to be an issue? Are you restricted to the time around slack tide?
Wind and current are a factor. Depends on the spot and conditions, right? A lot of the time I paddle up wind/current and fish my way back, then repeat. Depending on location and tide stage there are also usually eddies or spots that aren’t ripping and I can get a bit of respite there if needed.

Also, human powered is extra credit in my book.
Bonus, you can get really close to fish and wildlife in a canoe without them spooking.
First cast, pink on, and snap, my 8 weight broke 2 inches above the ferrule. Redington CRX. So took a generous walk back to the car for the 6 weight, which did fine. About 10 pinks and noho. Rain, sun, flat, windy. Did better on shore but did jump in the kayak for a bit, until the rain started in hard.

There was a short flurry of activity right around 6:45 as it was getting full light, similar to recent sessions here. I moved over to it and hooked up in about 10 casts. Landed another big male pink. The resident seal popped up 20 feet away right as I got the fish in the boat. Saw a couple more jumpers but that was it for me. The seal got one. Took a work call from the water, too, so that was a double win.
Between Dimey and Stoney as my fishing prognosticators I really don’t need to consult anything else.
It sounds like from the reports on here that the swarms are not on the east side of the central sound quite like they may be west side Sound and a little north. It is hard to be patient! I’m ready. View attachment 77051
What wildlife do you like to sneak up on? Usually I'm anchored up and they sneak up on me.
When fishing is slow Matt likes to sneak up on seals basking at the surface. He paddles as stealthily as possible and when he gets within a few feet he jumps up and yells "Boo".

I have to ask: Is catching salmon off north sound eastside beaches feasible? I ask because I am lucky enough to be able to choose between taking a boat, and hitting beaches before work, but if I take the boat route I will probably need to invest in a sinking line as I don’t feel comfortable in anything shallower than 20 feet of water. I have hit a couple beaches in 2021 and saw crazy numbers of fish jumping, every single one just past casting range
Just my personal opinion and coming from someone who can be on a east side of the sound north end beach within a 5 minute walk from my house.
While you can catch fish off them and many people do, if I’m going salmon fishing off the beach, 99% of the time I’m paying a ferry or bridge toll to do so.

She’s washed, oil changed and pissing. I’ll fish the beaches tomorrow before work as well as Friday afternoon but this weekend, the goal is to take the shine of those decks with some coho blood and pink slime for the first time this season….weather permitting.
