regarding home schooling...2020-2021 was the largest experiment in home schooling in history, with billions thrown at it by every school district in the country. This year with the schoolkids back in class, english test scores are down an average of 12% across the country, math scores down 10%. And what home schooling will never replace is the social exposure to the concentrated diversity of people and ideas...as in being out in the actual world
 
I'm not necessarily opposed to taxation, but I think the only fair, sustainable way to do it is by taxing income. Use taxes and "sin" taxes are regressive (meaning they impact people with less money disproportionately, particularly during economic downturns). Get rid of all that crap, tax income at a flat rate, and don't chase them out of town, but maybe bump up the corporate tax rate just a hair....

Well if we're being honest... The US was technically at war this whole time the southwest drought was going on, 911-afgan withdrawal. Humans are always at war, now we're just financing a war. I'll correct the record it was 299 years, but can I pick the re-education camp? I would like somewhere warm and sunny not the arctic north.

That wasn't homeschool, that was glorified zoom meetings. Comparing what schools did during the pandemic to actual parents that take homeschool seriously isn't a fair comparison.

During the ealry 70's, a population of South Vietnamese were relocated to the SF bay area.
In SF, within a year of their arrival, every stray dog had diassapeared from the streets, and when the ducks and geese in Golden Gate park began dissapearing as well, families were caught late at night in the park with large self-constructed nets they were using to capture the birds.
In Half Moon Bay, several large net boats showed up from Morro Bay in 74', purchased for members of the Hmong tribes, who started using illegal 2" mesh nets instead of the mandated 4" which allow for juvenile escapement, devastating our inshore rock cod fishery. It wasn't until a boat was fire bombed and a local fisherman was stabbed did the authorities finally shut down those boats. Their solution? They paid the Hmong for the boats they had already given them for free, and sent the boats to drydock....providing yet again there are few things government agencies cannot fuck up.

When I did some facilities project work in Washington DC, I encountered a prevalent saying among the government management level that does much to explain the sheer incompetance of our federal agencies..'you want a thorny problem that you own, work on for years, even decades, that can take you all the way to retirement'

Can I get an exemption from the climate austerity taxes? I mean I do live off grid in my primary residence and generate 100% green power and grow lots of food while stewarding a hundred year old forest of three digit average. God I hate trekking people about myself unless it's my fictional relatives etc. Anyway if I have to start paying all this climate austerity tax stuff I'm probably going to log the forest, start eating industrial produced meat by the ton and have ten or more kids in protest. So here you got a guy who obviously cares about the planet as it's work to live this way but is basically being radicalised by the Starbucks set environmental warriors and the Olympia climate clowns making policy. Don't even get me started on the DC clowns. Pretty sad when your policies hurt the very people "doing their part" as the climate shame posse likes to say.

Anybody ever wonder why people get radicalised against an agenda they were basically an ally for? Could it be in absolute repulsion to idiotic policies and rhetoric that will do nothing? Could it be the constant fake ass lip service shaming of people to feel better about themselves? Oh wait I don't buy that the government is changing the weather by giving them my money so I'm the bad guy? The whole thing stinks. The best thing the climate faithful can do is not have children, check for me. Then off themselves. Get in that Tesla, turn it on, and sit in the garage till sweet death lulls you off to that carbon exchange in the sky. Oh and bring friends, extra credits for a crew.
 
Washington has a LAW that states that the that requires a vote of the people to increase any tax but they (meaning the blood-sucking assholes) do it anyway. Our saving grace is that during any election, all of those misdemeanors perpetrated by said blood-sucking pigs are listed and allow you the people the right to cancel what the BS pibs have been doing. Unfortunately, it does not require them to refund the money that they collected.

When I lived in Portland I stopped paying the art tax, then moved. I think I didn't pay it for 2 years. I would get letters every year for a while demanding payment and interest until a few years ago they finally gave up. So you can just stop paying them and see what happens??
 
If we rise up in altitude and look down, a core truth is self evident...the majority of politicans on either side are bums, liars and hucksters, and the only way they can seize and maintain power is to be best at vilifying 'the other side', which creates voting support from 'their side.'
So nothing gets done, there is zero common effort to solve the core issues of our country, just a constant stirring of the anger pot...and it's all a misdirecton game...keep 'your side' stirred up and angry at the other side, make it all about how horrible 'they are', and than there is zero performance accountability for the pot stirrer.

We all have different perspectives based on where we were born, how we were raised, what we experienced in adulthood, our fortunes and misfortunes...regardless, put any group of us on a trout tream, sit around the camp fire later with a beer in hand and as fishermen and countrymen we'll find we share a whole lot more than we don't.

This thread is so far off of what was said in the beginning. My great, great grandson is 8, and his 5 year old sister are being home schooled by their mom, who is about as bright as a dark room. For 5 days a week they sit in front of a computer and read and do what it is said to them. Only the 5 year old can't read a lick. They might get about 10 hours of schooling a week. I told her that the 8 year old son should be in school. But she don't want to do that. When he's not doing school work he's sitting on a smart phone playing games. He does that for about 8 hours a day. It's very annoying.

I just washed my hands on this shit. She doesn't give a shit. So I quit trying to do it for her. What a waste of a bright kid.
 
I agree to blame government but don’t blame local government, they are trying to help you. Much of the laws that restrict projects are set at the state and federal level. Local government are not politicians trying to climb the ranks.

I was in a meeting last week discussing a bridge replacement and the federal representative said the current wait for their review of such a project is 5 fucking years! Our jaws hit the floor. This is a bridge replacement that does not increase traffic or anything, it’s just a safer slightly wider bridge but it does cross a salmon stream. The project would remove about 10 creosote piles from a stream and make a larger span, but a modern bridge needs to be slightly wider than the bridges of old and that means bigger and that means at least 5 year wait to go over how it will impact some protected salmon. The people that use that bridge will be driving on a hundred year old unsafe and toxic bridge for an additional 5 years while the feds assess the impacts.

The world today is totally bizarre, I understand throwing the book at new development, but the hands of builders and engineers are tied, they can’t do a damn thing to help you if there is a ditch or stream nearby with protected fish. I am as big of a proponent of protecting fish as anybody, but at some point repair and replacement needs to happen in a timely manner. At this point in my career I am starting to realize how little can be done for infrastructure because of the laws. Plus it feels like the federal folks are stonewalling and trying to save the world from a their position reviewing these projects and that shouldn’t be their job. Their job it to make sure stupid stuff doesn’t get built that increases impacts to protected fish. We often can’t even maintain and replace what we built the way the environmental laws written and that is just disgusting to me.

Our local schools are at 38.% of the national average in general learning(state criteria). Better than last year but this is post covid. Games and devices take up their time working on hand eye coordination and having their sense of humor distorted. We have to work harder. Kids need to have their potential saved.

I try but am failing, right now once our kids get out of school we usually end up giving them the tablets to keep them out of our hair or fighting with each other while we are working. My ultimate goal is to do projects with them after school till our shop closes and we all go home. To do this I would have to start around 4 or 5 AM then start my after school program at 3 till 9, makes for a long day. They hang out in our office in the back room while we work. Ultimately it's the parents that need to shape up, we can throw all the money we want at schools,blame public schools, blame homeschooling etc.. but if the kids have shifty self centered not involved parents then it's up to the kids, there are some unicorns that excel despite adversity but not enough.

Or we could grind them up into bio-deisel and solve the high gas prices, see how I tied it all in there...

The purported ideas for solutions via states are interesting. Put in place and professed at school are a good direction. But worthless without good parenting at home. This has always been. Consequently schools are always blamed. Projection of that finger at something else when it should be about the ones pointing fingers too.

Everyone should read up on the new "Environmental Justice Council" coming to Washington state in 2023. Sixteen council members will be appointed to advise the WA Legislature on how to spend the new windfall of carbon tax money.
