Winter Olympics Watch...

Pretty weak that they are letting that russian figure skater continue to compete after a failed drug test because it "would cause her irreparable harm". It's that sort of stuff that makes it hard for me to care too much about the olympics.
"Sure would be a shame if something happened to Kiev when our kid doesn't get to skate"

the whole Olympic thing has soured my interest in the event, some people get disqualified for illegal substances others do not, People competing for country's they are not citizens of, the Russians were ban for doping so they put on a different uniform & are allowed to compete .

I was thinking about this young skater. I just read that they said she got her medicine mixed up with her grandfather’s. Gimmee a break. First off, how much medication is a 15 year old on anyway that you would get it mixed up?

But i also thought about this. The irreparable harm to her will be the media’s scrutiny for years and it will follow her when she returns to the Olympics (if she doesn’t fail a drug test again). This teen skater is likely to be skewered over and over on social media, with all kinds of cruel memes and I’m sure booed if she wins the gold.

If i were her parent i would have her bow out. She has next Olympics to win the gold.

I second this. Top-level track athletes get one-year bans for doping all the time then it's back to normal for the pro circuit and Olympics once the ban in served. Bending the rules is going to create so much more reputation damage and resentment from figure skating fans and her non-Russian peers who she'll run into on the competitive circuit every year.

That said, if this kid turns out like most of her coach's athletes, then it might be her last Olympics as a competitor.

"The knowledge of the Sambo-70 club encouraging dehydration[34][35], starvation[36][37] and unchanged practice regime despite injuries[38][39] had been public before Beijing, and critics also already noticed Tutberidze's students regularly retiring injured before the age of 18.[40][41]"

All pretty sad and pathetic when you consider Sha'Carri Richardson was banned from the olympics for a little pot; quite the double standard - the IOC has absolutely no credibility in this.

cheers

The International Olympic Committee has been corrupt from the get go, time and time again they have been accused of 'selling' the summer and winter locations. Being based in Switzerland as a privately held non-profit the IOC is not subject to public audit of their annual P+L report which does not include salary details, so the senior excutives can pay themselves whatever they want without public disclosure
As to the Russian girl skater, does anyone think if that was an American they would still be competing?
Whereas I have nothing but sympathy for a massively talented 15 year old girl who has little choice but to comply with her masters, this is just more IOC corruption, and the Russians continuing to cheat witrh disdain..

I agree. I don't blame the teenager but those responsible could have very well planned on the officials giving her a pass because of her age. Allowing her to compete allows their cheating to succeed. Age has nothing to do with it when really it is her coach that is ultimately responsible.

Geezus .... you'd think they'd hold the winter Olympics someplace there is real snow and mountains in the back ground ... not concrete structures and nuclear plant water towers ! ! 😫

Not nuclear......steel mill.

How much do you think China offerred her and family to turn her back on the country she was born and raised in? 20 Mil?
They even waived their requirement that to compete for China the athlete must first relenquish their citizenship in any other country.
Don't think the cheers she heard in China will be matched here in the US if and when she returns.

May she ever be vilified. No??

That’s not how Russia operates in their skating programs…next Olympics there will be another 15-16 yo skater to take her place…and the doping/ ped‘s will continue unabated

I haven't been watching much of these Olympics, but was alerted by a facebook post that the son of a botanical colleague of mine won Gold in men's "freeski slopestyle," something I had never even heard of. He had an amazing final run, apparently executing tricks he had been working on, but had never been seen in competition before. Amazing! His mom is Italian, but is married to an American and was working in the US when her son was born. She subsequently took a job in Zurich, where he grew up and began skiing competitively; he now lives in Utah. Apparently he is into extreme back-country/alpine skiing as well as competitive skiing.

Drama, gossip, bla bla bla.

Hockey has been good. . .bummer the yanks lost to a very good and more experienced Slovak squad, coulda/shoulda won that one. Now for the ladies, hopefully we can get an upset on the Canucks for the gold. . .outplayed them in the prelim's but couldn't seal the deal.
