When do you start getting the itch?

Sounds like my wife. "Umm, aren't you fishing or something today? Leave me alone."

I am curious about those that fish year round...do you not ever get burned out? Are you able to still find stoke? That's another reason I like taking a break. Come spring I realize how much I've missed it and ready to get back after it.

@swimmy , IMHO it is easy to get burned out especially on a small lake. I fish less often - no 150 days/year of fishing - and in smaller chunks of time like a couple of hours. If the fishing is not good or not good enough, easy to came in and try another day. Also it is easy to determine when to go out - no wind (check), no downpours (check), do not have to freeze my ass off (check) - today has possibilities... Lake is not going anywhere...

Regarding 'stoke' - it is definitely there. Never goes away. That tug and then the fish leaping in the air, the sound of line being ripped off the reel never gets old. Knowing there are big fish to be caught, the anticipation is always there. Usually involves talking to myself or to the fish. When it does get old I know I am dead.

Nope, no burn out here - after being inside and sitting in front of a computer working all week, can't wait to get out with the pups on a stream and just feel the relax flow through the ole bones.

How do you burn out of this?

This is awesome

Didn’t fly fish at all last year…low streams and wildfires. Did fish for surf perch and crabbing a couple of times.

The itch can be terrible... You can only tie so many flies and watch so much fish porn.

I've been fortunate in that I've gotten out pretty much every week all through winter, although the weather for last few weekends has been less than conducive to fishing. I hope to get back out tomorrow or over the weekend.

I fish year around now and never get burned out. There are some times of the year when I am spending nearly all my free time fishing where I might think to myself “what’s wrong with you, fishing was horrible today, you could have gotten x, y and z done” or “you should have slept in and had breakfast with your wife”. The feeling passes quickly though and by the next day I’m filled with FOMO just knowing I missed out on a great day.

I do slow down from about Thanksgiving to The Fourth of July though and only fish 1 time most weeks. I owe it to my wife who does not fish. She’s very understanding once July roles around and I am no where to be found for 5 months.

You bring up something interesting.

I fish a little in Mar, more in April, even more in May. May is also the beginning of our major hatches…first up, the famed caddis hatch.

Come June and early July I’m chasing salmon flies almost every day. 6 weeks of hitting it hard.

July-Aug I start hiking/backpacking in the park and to high mtn lakes. This is also hopper season.

Sept is good camper weather and I move back down to the valleys and post up on a river.

Oct-nov is streamer fishing. This is also when things also start winding down.

There is definitely a pattern/rhythm to the year.

Don’t get bored. Fish all the time. Once a week offshore, mostly for food for my family and friends. Fish inshore any time I want. Mostly on good tides, catch a couple of bones and head home. I don’t get bored fishing for strong challenging fish. We don’t really have on off season in Hawaii. If the surf is big then I am in the water. If it is flat then I am fishing. When people want to fish then I am guiding. My itch comes when I get ready for a trip. I am normally packed two weeks before I leave. How could you have the itch and not get winter reds or specks in South Carolina? Know it was a wedding and family and all but you missed some beauty on the marsh. Redfish pull hard and the eat is awesome, they are comical on topwater. If you like to fish then fish. Just don’t make it a job, like I tell my wife who thinks I should charge more for guiding, I like sex but am not a prostitute, don’t make it a job. There are people who do it for a living and they can get burnt out, they just see dollar signs and use electric reels. For me I like being connected and thinking oh shit I hope I get this one in. Fishing like life itself should be challenging, and that makes it fun, that is my itch. So yeah I might go fishing again tomorrow.

I get the itch around now regardless of skiing conditions. I get the ski it h in October regardless of fishing (or skiing) conditions. At my work there is a subtle switch at both those times to the upcoming season’s hobbies, and we joke about how it happens like clockwork. This year has been tough for ski motivation as norcal has had two giant storms and thrn months of nice weather.

Got the trailer serviced and the casting deck installed last weekend. Hoping to float the Mo within the next few weeks.

Not only is it true, there are regulars on this forum that said you were a grandma killer if you questioned it.
There were members that were so tweaked out if you left your house for snacks, saying you were needlessly risking the life's of 1st responders if something happened to you while out and about. They couldn't see beyond their tin foil hats. A few months later, the same guys were bitching because they couldn't go to Canada and fish.

Really, you're going to go there, slam members for their response to a completely new, unknown, at the time untreatable disease, that has killed close to 1 million Americans in 2 years? Is that necessary?

cheers

it wasn't a slam. It was a recall of events.
