Goddamn right...Yes. This. I make the gravy, and if I want to drink it straight from the gravy boat when no one is looking, I'm going to damn well do it.

Only rarely...hot buttered rums I remember those.Did your folks ever do hot buttered rums or Tom & Jerryβs during the holidays?
Those drinks plus eggnog were always present during the holidays.

Anyone who thinks this is a joke doesn't have older generations family from the midwest. The things they thought were ok is just wild. My grandmother had a bit of this culinary style to her as well. I'm one of those rare few who can say they are not nostalgic for grandma's cookin. As long as I can avoid Aunt Edna's pink jello with Lucky Charms, lettuce, marshmallows, and bacon bits...topped off with a big gob of cigarette-tinged rancid ranch dressing.
Christ...the shit poor old Uncle Floyd used to have to eat on a daily basis...until the Sweet Release of Death.
Iβm with Evan here. And since I donβt drink anymore, itβs a lot harder to ignore everyone.I loathe Thanksgiving.
Food-wise: If I could make a list of foods I'd be perfectly fine never having again, it'd be most of what makes up the traditional Thanksgiving dinner menu. Just never has been my thing.
Family obligations: I come from a split family, wife has a split family, I have siblings and relatives who have various combinations of who they will and won't associate with/talk to throughout the family... So there ends up being about a half dozen different dinners being put together, and no matter which one we do or don't go to, everyone ends up getting offended at our choice. So we choose to offend everyone equally.
Christmas isn't much better. I'm just not a holiday person. I have lots of dinners and get-togethers with friends and family throughout the year that mean a lot more to me than compulsory holiday traditions.

Couple of bong hits will put everyone on ignore
Or so I am told
Not that I would know or anything...
Clean and sober, but thatβs a me problem.
Pickled Herring...
It'll be on the table again this year, and my 60 some year streak of not touching it will remain unbroken.

We simply don't talk about mom's 'slumgullion stew' lest the memories trigger involuntary gurge reflux.Jello salad is a Midwest staple fir sure.
I saw plenty of those as a young kid.
Mom is still a good cook at 90, but she makes them once a year...as she says 'it reminds me of where I am from, and what my mom made for me as a child'
Put that way, I don't comment, as I still make casseroles, because they remind me of growing up, and what my mom made for us when we were young.
