NFR What's your perfect Thanksgiving setup?

Non-fishing related
Yes. This. I make the gravy, and if I want to drink it straight from the gravy boat when no one is looking, I'm going to damn well do it.
Goddamn right...
😁

It's typical November out here today, rained most of the night, windy as hell, power is out...now the sun is out and clouds streaming across the sky.
Stonedfish is probably happier than a pig in shit right now.

:)

Did your folks ever do hot buttered rums or Tom & Jerry’s during the holidays?
Those drinks plus eggnog were always present during the holidays.
SF
Only rarely...hot buttered rums I remember those.
I made eggnog from scratch as a kid. Got a recipe from my first grade teacher...
Made it in a blender...no alcohol of course...raw egg yolks, the whole nine yards.

Always liked to cook, but now I seek out the fancy eggnog at the store, and add my own spirits.

Me too...
I add booze to it a couple times a year, but mostly straight from the container.
It's more of a dessert drink for me, well that and breakfast...
:)

As long as I can avoid Aunt Edna's pink jello with Lucky Charms, lettuce, marshmallows, and bacon bits...topped off with a big gob of cigarette-tinged rancid ranch dressing.

Christ...the shit poor old Uncle Floyd used to have to eat on a daily basis...until the Sweet Release of Death.

We're looking to start anew this year. Always traveled back home to Seattle. Not going to miss driving over the pass. Got lots of room here and a big kitchen. Looking to have 14, so we'll add another big table. Gonna do Safeway turkey for 8, make, or people are bringing couple favorite standards as well. Fire, TV, company, good stuff. Is rooting against Dallas on Thanksgiving and them loosing perfect? What SUCKS is no Apple Cup to enjoy while pigging out on leftovers. Will it be perfect, probably not, but it will be nice.

Anyone who thinks this is a joke doesn't have older generations family from the midwest. The things they thought were ok is just wild. My grandmother had a bit of this culinary style to her as well. I'm one of those rare few who can say they are not nostalgic for grandma's cookin.

I loathe Thanksgiving.

Food-wise: If I could make a list of foods I'd be perfectly fine never having again, it'd be most of what makes up the traditional Thanksgiving dinner menu. Just never has been my thing.

Family obligations: I come from a split family, wife has a split family, I have siblings and relatives who have various combinations of who they will and won't associate with/talk to throughout the family... So there ends up being about a half dozen different dinners being put together, and no matter which one we do or don't go to, everyone ends up getting offended at our choice. So we choose to offend everyone equally.

Christmas isn't much better. I'm just not a holiday person. I have lots of dinners and get-togethers with friends and family throughout the year that mean a lot more to me than compulsory holiday traditions.
I’m with Evan here. And since I don’t drink anymore, it’s a lot harder to ignore everyone.

Jello salad is a Midwest staple fir sure.
I saw plenty of those as a young kid.
Mom is still a good cook at 90, but she makes them once a year...as she says 'it reminds me of where I am from, and what my mom made for me as a child'

Put that way, I don't comment, as I still make casseroles, because they remind me of growing up, and what my mom made for us when we were young.
:)

Couple of bong hits will put everyone on ignore
Or so I am told
Not that I would know or anything...

Saw many mountains of Tomato Aspic back in the day. It was like rubberized vomit.
Never touched the stuff.
SF

Pickled Herring...
It'll be on the table again this year, and my 60 some year streak of not touching it will remain unbroken.
😁

I ain't missing a thing...
🀣

Both creamed herring and pickled herring are present every year.
Lutefisk...thankfully finally disappeared a couple decades ago after 40 some years of nobody touching it...
πŸ˜‚

The only good herring is cut plug, or brined strips wrapped on a Kwikfish.

We simply don't talk about mom's 'slumgullion stew' lest the memories trigger involuntary gurge reflux.

As children of the great depression they ate most anything that was once reputed to be of animal or plant origin.
