What's in your vise?

It does seem slightly under gauge for the sheer size of it. I imagine a musky would test it, alright.
Gunnar seems to like them for some of his musky shit, but I haven't really heard much as far as actual landing fish on flies tied with them. I have some 4/0 and I think 6/0 if you want them to play with (and if I can find them...I just don't have confidence with bigger fish on them).

Kinda goes back to "if it ain't broke...."

edit: Just saw this posted up on Gunnar Brammer's page with the smaller variety of that hook that I though some folks might enjoy.

Could a 5-6” fly get it done on a musky?
Yep. Especially early season.

My most productive flies are in that 7-8" range. While I love throwing bigger shit, bottom line, smaller stuff works amazingly well. Hell, throw a 1/0 or 2/0 on your fly, and you'd be completely in the game.

There's one gear guy out there that throws mostly 6" white jigs on his baitcaster. He absolutely crushes. He actually got one from shore a couple of weeks ago, but on a bucktail spinner....e.g. ripping it. I'm not surprised by the spot he got it, but I am surprised by the fast speed of lure in 45-ish degree water.

Hook: TMC 5263 sz. 10
Thread: Montana Fly Company 6/0 Black
Tail: Nature's Spirit Cow Elk dyed Black
Body: 0.5mm Razor Foam
Underwing: Black Krystal Flash
Overwing: Same as Tail
Parachute Post: Fly Tyler's Dungeon Congo Hair Bright White
Hackle: Whiting Saddle Hackle Black
Thorax: Hareline Ice Dub Peacock Eye
Legs: Sili Legs Black with Red Fleck

I made some changes to this one. The original calls for a floss body. I definitely don't mind that, but I thought razor foam would add some durability, segmentation, and add to the floatability. I did put a thin layer of super glue down before wrapping the foam for added durability. The original pattern also calls for actual peacock herl for the Thorax. I swapped this for the ice dub, again for durability. Peacock is awesome, but it's brittle, and even with some super glue underneath it tends to explode after a couple fish. Especially when you need the Thorax to be this large, so you are using 5 or 6 strands of Peacock herl. From my knowledge of tying this pattern (in multiple colors) with the original materials, it also requires a lot of thread to build up the tapers in both the abdomen and Thorax, and I thought the substitutions I used fixed having to deal with that. Lastly, I used silicone rubber legs instead of the round rubber called for in the original. In Eastern Washington, round rubber is a waste of time. The sun, heat/cold, and low relative humidity can disintegrate round rubber in a single fishing season. I've had rubber legs become brittle and break off before even getting to fish the fly, so I have switched almost entirely to silicone legs.

My final note would be that I dig the underside picture, except for the legs that are being pulled down by gravity (top leg pulled towards wing, bottom leg pulled towards the earth). When you hold it so that gravity does not affect the legs they are a perfect X...might have to figure out another way to take that picture angle...I know, silly.

This (along with 5 more of the same) are going in my Green River dry fly box!

well (you know what's coming next), how does that mofo swim?

looks awesome!
Ok
Took the flies to swimming lessons today.
They look good but question.
The flat heads will track well and kick on the strip but they will also turn on their side, look at you, then right themselves.
Is this what I’m after??
I’m a newbie remember.

Yes! That extra wobble is good.
