What's in your vise?

ok, let's see one off of your vise! Trust me, you don't want to see that (type of precision work) coming off of mine...not my forte.

That's a great video showing a good number of bucktail tying techniques that honestly, anyone who really wants to get into tying with bucktail (and doing it well and with intention) would do good to watch it.

One of my friends does outstanding bucktail work with flies tied on a Beast platform with extreme precision. I'm not that talented, so I like to cover up my bucktail work! ....they just aren't nearly as pretty, but I get them to swim and cast as intended.

Just happened to watch that this weekend. Had no idea bucktail could be such a precision tying material. Still mostly a synthetic junky for large saltwater stuff, but this inspires me to mess around with BT more. The only thing I'm not nuts about with these patterns is the bulbous/rounded heads. I'm probably obsessing too much on natural profile, but all the baitfish I'm aware of have much "pointier" heads. Guessing there is a functionality factor like pushing a lot of water to give the back half more action? Anyway, not really a critique since they are beautiful and clearly effective patterns.

Yeah that's far far beyond my neophyte abilities. But thought people here would enjoy it

Fish Flies: The Encyclopedia of the Fly Tier's Art - Terry Hellekson

Baja (or basically mullet) oriented. I couldn't find my tab eyes, so I went with the copic marker eye. Basic hollow tie, with nayat for the tail and nmf baitfish builder mixed with FTD BGD Clyde dubbing for the head and bucktail as the primary material (white, yellow, light olive, dark olive). 3/0 Kona big game carnivore for the fish pricking part...

Ha! Nice!
I've been tying up crappie jigs for my sisters in MN - mostly because the panfish and the occasional hammer handle tear up plastics pretty fast.
They're intended to be hung under a bobber, but could definitely be slung as flies, too!

I would've used shad darts for the hooks 🪝 🙂
Funnily enough, I'm waiting for a packet of shad darts to arrive right now for the next round! Ordered unpainted ones to custom dip myself in the colors the crappie like on their main lake

I’ve been on a Crappie kick this past year and have had luck with a white marabou tail under a bobber.
