The over wing is deer hair already. Lee also uses a rusty brownish orange poly yarn for the same effect which is way easier than mixing different color Congo colors to get that color , still need to brush it out the poly yarn before applying. It's a pretty popular fly pattern I'm sure there is probably a bunch of step by step videos on you tube. He 1st tied the Clark's Stonefly over 40 years ago and came out with the Lady Stone and the twisted stonefly in 2015Thanks very much. I've never used Congo Hair. I'm guessing it holds its bulk, so it works with the deer hair for floatation. True?
You will get good at this. Beginners curse, using too much material.First attempts at sardines. Got a ways to go. Just started trying to tie flies last year

Those will still catch fish. They look great. If you use synthetic materials you can cut the taper in with your scissors for the tail or just stack them offset when you first tie them in so the tail has the taper you are looking for. Keep at it!!First attempts at sardines. Got a ways to go. Just started trying to tie flies last year

Showing off my fly tying ADHD from the last couple weeks. I usually can’t sit long enough to tie more than 2 flies each session.
These kick ass!
