What's in your vise?

Yellow Quail

Headed out soon on my annual start of winter, warm weather trip my wife and I take annually. Last year it was Belize, this year the Big Island. The fishing in Hawaii will not compare but honestly, I’m good with that. For me, fishing in Hawaii is about hiking out to a quiet beach early in the AM, setting up some shade, reading, listening to the waves, snorkeling, and when my ADD kicks in, getting up and exploring the beach with the single fly rod, small box of flies, pliers and small spool of flouro I bring with me. I never catch anything sexy like big bones, then again I don’t really try, though I’d make an effort if the opportunity arose. Unfortunately it has not in the dozen or so trips I’ve made to the islands over the last 15 years. So, I am content with my minimalist approach. Reminds me of when I was a kid and friends and I would grab our bikes and kill a summer afternoon fishing for whatever would bite the worms we found under the woodpile. Just letting the day pass harassing a fish or two with the promise of the same level of responsibility the next day. Some flies I tied for the trip. I’ll combine these with some shrimpy patters I’ve tied in years past and a few baitfish patterns, and I’m good to go.

I hear you…I’m on the beach in HI right now…the fly fishing is never great where I’m staying here, but just wetting a line as the sun comes up is enough for me…
