What's in your vise?

I thought a "cutthroat candy" fly was very different, more like a caddis with a hair back and wing:

Found a Cutthroat Candy fly a while back on Larry Jurgens’ site; vintage 60’s Colorado pattern. Similar to Bongoman’s, just with a Trude wing.

I’m going to pinch that pattern. One of my goals this winter is to replenish my trout flies. I love fishing for high-altitude brook trout in NE Oregon and that pattern would work well.

Stripped down version without the wing; probably won’t make much difference.

Tried another one with a bigger hook, Ahrex NS110 #8. I think it looks better.

I’ve been having some luck on SRC lately with this pattern. The Pat Cohen mono trick keeps the bunny tail foul free. Since they are unweighted, you can fish them super slow to crawl across the bottom without hanging up on an intermediate line. That works great when fishing more natural colors to imitate polychaete worms.

Stonefish, thanks for the tip on mono for rabbit tails. I found Pat Cohen’s demo on YouTube:

You bet.
That technique works much better then any of the other techniques I've tried using mono to avoid the bunny tail fouling.
The bunny still swims well using his technique.

Oh wow that is brilliant!

If you Google Cutthroat Candy fly pattern you'll find a bunch of patterns by the same name. I can remember back in the day when there were a lot of guys calling the Borden Special Cutthroat Candy. God only knows how many different patterns go by the Caddis Fly Larva handle

Lou - If you don't mind would you explain the hardware construction of this fly? The tippet tie in and the rest of the steel? Thanks//Pat
This is the chassis, that’s 15lb braid and 3.8mm tungsten black bead in the front.
Do not use that Core hook, it’s soft as shit 🤣 I bought it to try out but have delegated it to a sacrificial role, snip the hook bend when you’re done.
