Backyard used to tie up a wicked 16" rainbow pattern that he used on pass lake and other WA lakes. Fished deep off a Teeny 200. He almost lost his rod on more than few occasions and or broken 12# maxima!

Still one of the fishiest dudes I've ever met or fished with! He could throw the rope like very few could replicate! Miss that Guy
 
My 2 buddies from high school and I had been doing an annual trip for 10 years. Then Covid hit, and we have missed the last 2 years.

We have done all sorts of places, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Fernie BC, even Yakima a couple years when busy summers made it difficult to get togethor.

Well, after a 2 year hiatus, one of the buddies booked us 3 days of guided fly fishing on the Green River in Utah in early May. I did a little research and found BWO's were one of the predominant hatches that time of year. So, I started tying up BWO's in Olive, posted one on Instagram, and the guide service who we are going with saw it. They DM'd me and said the BWO's on the Green are gray, not olive, despite the name. So, I started tying them in gray:

I'd fish that bottom one all day every day for winter steelhead....There's just something about pink as my confidence color for winter chrome (kinda like black for tigers).

body - hare’s ear olive
body hackle - yellow/black
1st shoulder - pheasant rump dyed black
2nd shoulder - pheasant rump dyed olive
head - pheasant aftershaft dyed black (in dubbing loop)

Hopefully there will be a picture of this hanging off of a fishes lip in the future. Don't be intimidated by someone else's tying. At this point in my game I fully understand that I can catch a fish on a chunk of dog shit if I can get said poo down to the fish. I tie these fancy flies for me because that's where I am in my fly tying. I don't care to fish egg patterns and nymphs, or stare at a bobber. I just quarter cast, mend, let get down and swing then I look around me and take in the beauty that is fly fishing and wait for a fish to snap me back.

oh, don't worry...that was 100% tongue in cheek (as was the posting of those egg flies....aka whitefish crack, aka short-fin grayling crack)
