What's Catching You Fish?

Stuff like this caught me plenty of redsides and whitefish on Saturday...

You had to zoom in to make them look REAL big to make yourself feel better about fishing something so small--right?
Pretty much! They're 16s

classic early fall day with not a breath of wind, which usually makes fishing CP tough....second cast a gorgeous fall colored Cranebow nailed my Damesel nymph on the end of a midge tip and put on an air show...three more to the boat in the next hour on the same fly than the bite shut down, and regardless of what I tried could only watch a flotilla of XL fish cruising under my boat in the shallows. Gave it another hour, da nada, decided to bag it, just short of the launch ramp saw what looked to be a really nice fish sip something on the surface...did it again...laid a #20 Griffiths Gnat out few feet from the last ring and watched it get sucked in...great way to end a three hour session

Just starting my journey of tying after about a decade of flirting with the idea, but finally made it a priority and have sat down a few days each of the past few weeks to knock out a few. Fished the little guy below last week and it got 11 in a little less than two hoursIMG_3231.JPGot me

Played around with some different stuff for the beach this summer. I was trying to imitate some of the stuff like Ace Hi Fly and Chem Light that the gear fishing folks were having a lot of success with.
The last 20+ coho I hooked all came on this super flashy high tie clouser pattern. It’s always fun to tie something a bit different from the stuff I usually tie and have it actually work.

Fished for about 4 hours today. Tied all those nice flies last week, hooked up on one of them for about 15 seconds before he left me in the weeds. No love on 4 other flies. Finally did one last pass through the run with my usual go-to fly, and hooked up and landed on my fifth cast. Hooked another one about 10 casts later, but he got off. It looks like the hook bend opened up a bit. Also the hourglass eyes were spinning around so I ended up ditching this fly after I saved the eyes. So overall a great day.

All those years of learning to tie flies and what am I catching them on? Blobs!! A jig hook with a gold bead and 2 small pieces of Fritz. If you can tie your shoes you can tie this fly in a minute or two. Another thing that flies in the face of reason is how effective it is when stripped fast. I fished a lake a few days ago that has a lot of downed sunken logs around the perimeter and stripping a blob over the top of those logs I would see fish dart out from the depths and attack the fly. What are they thinking?

The usual cast of fall flies has not worked well so far and catches are about 50/50 on blobs and small soft hackles. The fish's favorite soft hackle has been with a pheasant tail body counter wrapped with fine wire, a small peacock herl collar and either a partridge or grouse hackle. This worked on the North Fork of the Flathead, the Madison and Rock Creek a couple of weeks ago and did well on two local lakes again this week. With a fresh supply tied yesterday it will see duty again on Sunday for some high jumping rainbows, I hope they like it...
