What's Catching You Fish?

fished the 10 to one shift today (lake only 35 mins away), a brown red bead #10 on a Hover line did well during the caddis hatch, handful to the boat, none under 20" including a couple of really nice ones, note the tail width on the lengthy snake. Very few anglers about of any type. Lost a really nice one in the channel just before the take out that absolutely hammered a purple Chubby and went aerial over and over until unpinning...fun times.

Purple and orange curb feelers have been working great just before daylight and in the shadows. They're harder to tie than they look. I think I got the proportions down this year. Fishing 'em I love to hold all the fly line off the water and twitch the fly.. seems like the take is even more explosive than a skated presentation.

We had lots of moisture this past spring on the Oregon Coast and conditions were less than idea for tidewater springer fishing. The fish spent little time in the estuary and often just blasted through - which is of course what they are wired to do. These fish are hard enough to coax into grabbing when everything is perfect. My fish per outing average hovered around 0.22 but I had more fun than a barrel of monkeys. This one was yet another victim of the infamous chartreuse clouser.

How was the rod?
The Steffen was good. More powerful than I’m used to casting. I honestly felt that I could have used a slightly heavier line than the Cortland WF 6 but I was fishing close with maybe 15 ft of line out so maybe not the best test.
The water I was on was mostly boney pockets so I switched to the Barclay 3 wt and it was, as always, a pleasure.

This (I'm still gonna call it a "clam-eggo")

Caught several of these...

Caught a nice brown above Wizard Falls yesterday — shy, so we skipped the picture — with the new favorite PMD, “Blond Venus.” Two-hackled spider, clipped dry saddle then mallard wing covert. When a Buzzball just won’t cut it.

Not sure if the extra-long tag is helping me any….

I love hearing about browns in that spring creek. few and far between, but when i do hear about them, they're usually "good" fish.
