What's Catching You Fish?

A friend’s river coho pattern is proving very effective on the Skagit. Meet the β€œSchlong Day”, one fly fisherman’s answer to the Dick Nite.

There is a dick involved. That would be Dick Empie. That pattern is very similar to his β€œGoldie” pattern minus the red gills. Originally tied with Bill’s Bodi Braid.

Who knows when I'll be back here doing this but I got a few more stripers from the home waters yesterday evening.
This little one broke the skunk

The sun went down behind the hills so I called last cast and found a willing player. 25" and a handful on the 6wt!

Perfect size for feeding three. Last night's dinner and today's lunch. Ancient family recipe as popularized by the Woks of Life. Pro tip: you can just pan fry the fish instead of steaming and it's just as good. IMO striper is far superior to halibut and salmon in this recipe.
Side dish was 怒盐虾

The October stimulator I posted was extremely well liked by the fish today. They were smashing it the second it landed, or at least early in the drift, and sometimes even dangling a few inches above the water if the anchor fly wasn't too deep. Problem was the were all small with parr marks.

After I hung that pair in a tree I switched to these,

and the dry started producing fish without marks immediately. Weird.

Can tell it's been a two months since I quit smoking and started riding my bike again. Covered several miles in the deep cut today and felt fresh as a daisy when done.

Fish a high Cascade Lake and saw big fish chomping something large on the surface. Not sure but seemed like they were occasionally eating the butterflies that are everywhere this summer. Tried a chubby...no takers.

Then I went to my fav O Caddis pattern

Went looking for fresh coho this morning. Found crap tons of uncooperative dark chinook jamming upriver instead.

Fun but frustrating. Pretty much threw the kitchen sink at them. Finally had 4 legit grabs with one to hand. All on a simple polar shrimp-ish nymph.

Not sure what happened to mess up this guys mug.

First trip out on a rainy day this season which was a welcome change from the last few trips. Coho continue to allude me this year so I switched to fishing wood for cutthroat to end the day.

Landed a few smaller fish and was ready to call it a day when I tight roped onto the log jam to get one more cast to an area I hadn’t fished yet and this fish ran out for a small off white closer.
