What have you done for your boat lately?

Oh crap. Just got back to WA and added a new vessel to the fleet of human/wind powered craft. Unfortunately this Walker Bay 10 is too large to fit IN the minivan so it's car-top only until I get my trailer ready. I think this one will end up in BC as a sistership to the Tyee Spirit.

How do you like the torqeedo?
As a tender motor it was fantastic. Quiet, good battery life, and enough power to anchor out and slow motor 4 plus dog for brews and chews. Haven’t fished it yet but at trolling speed it should last several miles and hours. I’m guessing top end is around 7 kts, so it’s not a speed boat. But it can launch easily (I think) and you could run 2 to 4 miles, fish a tide, maybe 2, and get back with confidence.

Update- I put my readers on and saw that the purple wire actually has been taped off on purpose. So it was like that when it ran.

Great...So checked all the fuses while the batteries were charging. I threw my very old (2018!!) Cabelas deep cycle battery in there once it was up to 13.2 volts and now we have all power back. Trim, dash and ignition.

I saw a few posts that these EFI Mercs can be picky about voltage. And from the service manual-
NOTE: EFI models - Engine must have a fully charged battery to start the engine.

So, I'm gonna go with the idea this 2023 battery that came with the boat probably sat out in the freezing cold, uncharged, not being used by the previous user (only 271 hours on it) and could be damaged even though it charged to 13.2 when the Genius1 went green. Not sure, but hoping it's not an alternator thing.

What battery do you guys like for main engine starting & accessories?

I have a West Marine Starting 1000 for starting. I ran the electronics off of that last year but this year I bought another battery for that so I would not drain the starter.

More on the Torqeedo:
I haven’t pushed the limits and run out of power. There is an easy to use battery life indicator, so my intent generally is to start heading back at around 60%. Also, and this is likely true with all similar electric outboards, running at top speed you’ll sap the battery fairly fast. I don’t recall what the manual says exactly, so I’ll just say an hour, so with my Achilles maybe 7 miles. However at half throttle you might get 3 or more hours, extending range to maybe 10 miles. And at trolling speed you can last a long time, several hours. Probably longer than my attention span for trolling. These are ball park from my fading memory. If you want actual manual info, it’s 30’ or so away, and I’m just that lazy.
Cost wise these are fairly prohibitive for most probably. It was perfect though on our cruiser so I didn’t think twice, as was also true for this inflatable. I was in the buy once cry once mindset. Now that it’s in the fleet, I’m happy to have it.
And I’ll confirm that they are extremely quiet. You can hear it, but even at top speed your conversation is normal. Good enough for fiching me thinks.

My local Autozone had this one for $109. It gets good marks and the price was impossible to beat so pulled the trigger-
Duralast 24MS-DL Group Size 24 Marine Starting Battery 800 CCA 1000 MCA

I'm not convinced my breakdown was caused by the battery not having enough juice to satisfy the ignition.

I'm suspecting it was more likely the very grungy main negative cable terminal. All cable terminals and battery posts got the wire brush and are nice and shiny now. I'll be carrying a small brush with me from now on. (y)
And today I ran a little test. I left my dash and nav lights on for an hour to take the old 2018 battery down to 12.6. The trim and ignition still worked.
So I kept the previous owner's 2023 battery since it goes to 13.3 and green on the Genius1 and I gave Autozone a nasty old 2008 battery as my core return. More room in the shed now!

We'll see how it goes manana.

No power issues today! And cleaning the pond scum off the hull has me up to a top speed of 35mph. I'll take it. The previous owner's 2023 battery did well on the bow mount. Used it hard for a few hours and it still had half a tank according to the old Minn Kota Powerdrive.

The clouds never relented today so no carp in the boat. I did have a brief shot. I was bass fishing along the east side of an island to get out of the wind. So the visibility was pretty good. I had a tanker carp cruise past. About 10 minutes later I was thinking "I really should put the bass rod down and just start looking for carp. And there they were... 2 trophy carp, BOTH tailing with their faces in the dust.
And one was a mirror.

I got one cast before they both spooked since the boat was drifting towards them. I didn't dare hit the foot pedal to try and avoid them as that would've spooked them even sooner. And my cast wasn't good enough.

No musky either. Only fish today was a little smallie. The boat is no longer skunked. 😁

I remember you fashioned a push pole but it's hard to musky fish and pole your "skiff" for carp! ;-) Glad you got your motor issue resolved.

Bought a new fuel line and filter. My 2005 Lowe has the same damn crappy QuickSilver fuel line my last boat had.

So do yourself a favor if u have the grey/silver fuel lines from Merc/QuickSilver...throw it away!

Those lines have an inner layer that disintegrates with time. Especially with today's gas. You end up with this crap or even bigger chunks in your filter. And as a result issues when trying to accelerate. Even if the chunks stay in the line they block the flow of gas and starve the engine of fuel.
Nasty...

New fuel line and filter installed. Amazing this thing was even running. This is just what was in the connector!

It took a few trips to start breaking down that old fuel line. Glad it showed itself before I took it on a river or in the tide!

Took it out to my local power lake to test the new fuel line and filter. Amazing how they run just a tad better if they're actually getting fuel. :)

It ran perfect with no stumbles all through the rpm range. At WOT it hit 34 mph at about 5800 max rpms which is right in the correct range of 5500-6000. I'm happy now. (y)

Nice!
My Yamaha runs great but it does stutter sometimes punching full throttle from low, I wonder if my fuel line could be the cause..it’s over 10yrs old.

replace the line, and also consider running a can of Sea Foam through it. My last boat had a 40hp Merc that despite a full tune, line, filters, etc, occasionally stumbled, ran a can of Sea Foam through it, end of issue.

Really nice oars. I got the Dyno X. Gonna be a few weeks but worth the wait. Hopefully the last oars I ever buy.

I have a pair with the shoal cut blades. I recommend them if you often find yourself in shallow water.

I gave one of mine a new home. My favorite Nephew is coming in today. When he leaves, he'll be hauling my Koffler pram back to Montana where it will see lots of beneficial use on sacred waters by the next generation of Nephews.

had to be your fave to gift him a Koffler...

He was my shadow for a lot of years . . . fishing, hunting, lived with me in Bremerton. I am very proud of him and love him dearly.
