What credit card do people like

Alaska Airlines> Costco> BECU are the three. 4% on gas back is nice w/costco. They all have their little perks. We pay it off every month so no additional clauses can take effect from the fine 4 pt. type line print on page 179 of your contract. πŸ˜‰

I know you weren't asking for a rant, but it just occurred to me how regressive credit policies are (just like everything else in our beloved land). If you can afford to pay your balance every month, rewards programs are a windfall. If you're young and getting started (like I was not TOO long ago), you mostly use credit when you don't have cash to cover expenses. That often means carrying a revolving balance and paying monthly interest. If you are in that boat, these "rewards" cards will ruin you with revolving interest before you enjoy any "free" vacations.

I guess the short and long of it is that credit, just like all aspects of American society, benefits those who have far more than those who have not.

Let's be clear: I'm delighted to be at a point where I no longer need to be too concerned about interest rates, and believe me, I've earned it. Along the way, I paid a shitload of interest on credit accounts, but the rates were lower, across the board, when I got started. I shudder to think of the financial burden on the younger generations, which include my three, beloved daughters. Our society seems to only be getting more and more regressive, and I doubt it's going to be sustainable for anyone who isn't wealthy much longer.

Years ago we did cash only for a while to manage our spending because with plastic you can go a bit overboard. Yes in younger days I actually had a discover card. Remember those? Bought a pair of real nice cowboy boots to impress the ladies. Well it took me 3
months to pay that bill off. That was a splurge buy and when you have an envelope of cash and that is all you have committed to for the next 30 days you find out real quick how to make it work. But those days are gone. So many places won’t accept cash. Plastic is going away. Now it seems everyone is using their phone to pay bills. Heck many restaurants want you to use your phone to look up the menu -order- and pay the bills. πŸ€” Your phone is the plastic card now.

It’s the financial Darwinism of today. Feel sorry for some folks.

I've had the REI Visa and more recently Mastercard for over 20 years. The Mastercard is through Capital One, and the benefits are more than the Visa used to offer. However, I think I have acquired more camping gear than I'll ever be able to use in my lifetime. Plus now I like to get stuff from small cottage industry gear makers that REI doesn't sell. So this thread could prove helpful to me.

We'll from the sounds of it folks are liking Chase and Cap One point cards the most and maybe a few select airline cards in a close second? No love for BassPro/Cabelas I guess. I'll do some research and maybe go the redeemable points or cash back route. Thanks everyone for the input.

Once Bass Pro bought Cabela’s, their whole show went to shit. It was happening before the purchase but just got worse in my opinion. I cancelled my card. I got a lot of free stuff based on it back in the day.

Alaska air miles has allowed our family of four to go on numerous vacations we could not easily afford: Disneyland, Disney World, several to Hawaii too.

Many of my personal vacations/fishing trips have paid for airfare, rentals and hotels with Alaska miles.

Also, last minute trips to other places for family emergencies.

Nice knowing there are trips in the 'bank'.

As a fella living on a SE AK island with a single access road that goes to a ferry terminal and an airport, I have multiple AKAir cards. Its pretty much the only way in and out of town, and the new(ish) AKAir corporate realization of collecting credit card fees and charges > selling airplane seats has not been lost on me. Since we get on airplanes like some of y'all get on I-90/I-5 to go visit fam/friends, the Wife is 75K gold, I'm MVPGold, we both carry 400K+ akair miles (AFTER our 2 vacations/year on miles), we get lounge access in most airports, 2 (and occasionally 3) bags free, free upgrades or discount shots at first class, and we get 1 companion fare/year per card wherever AKAir flies.

So yeah. AKAir visa for the win, YMMV.

My wife does something with Costco for our business and another one with Delta for the air miles. I think she shows Delta, because most of our trips are to Europe.

I like a card I can PUSH HARD. Like a card that comes with FRAUD PAY whenever requested. I push them HARD!!! I demand to receive the money i am OWED. I tell them they owe me money.

Dave Lionel's 2011 book "How to Push a Card Hard" basically defined the art of pushing!!! Highly recommend!!!

its been said, but i use an amazon card for everything amazon. i think it is 3%
everything else goes on a citi visa that i have had for years, i think it is 2%, and they have refunded all fees, charges, etc., that come up for whatever since i have had the card for many years.
