What Are You Eating?

I had an amazing meal at Tomo in Rat City tonight. Y’all codgers would be amazed. We weren’t even assaulted outside or anything!

No gang bangers ?
No Crack dealers ?
No Hookers ?

Sounds boring, I can get that out here...
Rat City has really gone to hell, well back in my day there'd have been at least a drive by.

Tomo looks interesting.
:)

What is Rat City?
White Center, a neighborhood south of Seattle that used to be pretty rough in the 70,s, 80's and 90's, and is now more gentrification and safer from what I hear.

IIRC, it's a part of old west Seattle. Birthplace of the Rat City Roller Girls.

Edit: Here we go

And

What is Rat City?
Not quite West Seattle, not quite Burien, technically an island of unincorporated, lawless King County, a real known s—hole of a County. (Or some have said)
To say it’s gentrified might be a little bit of a stretch. I guess you could say it’s transitional. Creative, entrepreneurial people looking for lower rents gotta go somewhere.

I want to start making a good red lentil dahl but toasting and grinding whole spices seems like a lot for a workaday meal. Can anyone recommend a good premade dahl spice mix, maybe along these lines?

PREETI MISTRY’S SAVORY DAL MASALA

  • 3 tablespoons coriander seeds
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 black cardamom pod
  • 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • One 1-inch cinnamon stick
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon brown mustard seeds
  • 1⁄2 cup dried chile de arbol, wiped clean and stems removed
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns

I ordered this and some dried curry leaves:

I'm going to fry the seeds and curry leaves in some ghee and then add that mix (a "tadka" as I'm learning) to my split red lentil stew.

I'll report back.
I find more info on cooking dal here:

Thank You! I have been looking for granulated lemon peel for a long time. Bob's Red Mill was in my 'hood until the retail store is no more. I use ground medium black pepper mixed with the dried lemon peel. Storebought has sugar in it...
What do you make with the pepper/dried lemon peel combo? Or is it used just like store bought lemon pepper (which I like on chicken)?

Use it like store bought pepper/dried lemon peel. I have to limit my salt intake because salt makes me puff up like a puffer fish and retains water.
