We Got These River Otters Comin' In

People involved in the shellfish industries in California hate the Sea Otters. They are extremely cute and tourists love them. Millions of dollars every year is spent on "protecting" otters, and to hide the fact that they are extremely destructive. Once they move into an area they will eat every Abalone, Sea Urchin, clam etc...If a person gets busted with one abalone he will be harshly punished...but an otter will eat dozens of them every day...until there are no more. But there is big money for "experts" to lie. Unscrupulous biologists will gladly sacrifice the kelp beds to keep their funding.
Yeah, sea otters are the problem. Never mind they were part of a healthy ecosystem for a couple million years...

The Montana otters are much more badass than otters here, just like Montana grannies are more badass.
😁

The Native Americans, living along the coast of California, were fully aware of the destructive nature of the Sea Otter. They "controlled" the population of Sea Otters to minimize the destruction, but not to the point of extinction. They were smart. However, the recent attempts to re introduce otters into eco systems that will be devastated, is completely fueled by corrupt, lying, paid off assholes that are greedy. "Friends of the Sea Otter", the Sierra club etc.. pay big bucks. The people that witness the destruction are dismissed and ridiculed.

So it is environmental groups and wild animals that are devastating ecosystems?

The real problem with all of these violent and troublesome encounters is none of these people took the initiative. You will never be the victim of a wildlife attack if you strike first, remember that. You must show your dominance over all creatures….. large, small and especially cute. Do not let their soft angelic coats and button noses soften your warrior spirit.

Absolutely Zak...a population of Sea Otters will completely devastate the reef below a kelp bed. They don't tell you that at Sea World. Once every shellfish is gone they will focus on fin fish. They will turn a beautiful reef, full of life, in to a wasteland of destruction. That is what they do, and I don't fault them for it. However, the millions of dollars spent to promote them and hide the truth is simply frustrating.

Thank you for sending me down an interesting rabbit hole.

Only a small number of people have actually witnessed, first hand, the destruction of the ecosystems that Sea Otters are capable of. When you see a video of a reef before Sea Otters and then after Sea Otters it is painfully obvious that they are not good for the reef. However, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent to deceive the public (and NPR). The blatant lies of highly paid "biologists" are often "over the top". They will say Sea Otters are actually good for the reef! And the small number of fisherman ( that want to protect the ocean) have no chance to defeat the giant money making scheme that simply uses the Sea Otter as a cash cow. The public will believe the "scientist"...the ones that are getting paid a ton of money to lie.

Second only to Big Possum, the biggest threat out there....Big Otter.
They start grooming you young, with Otter Pops, so you don't perceive them as a threat.
Next thing ya know, boom...they're gang bangin' baby seals to death.
Nattering Nabobs of Necrophiliac Negativity is what they are.
