We Got These River Otters Comin' In

Add seals to the β€œwhen animals attack” list.
The seal probably thought she was maybe just a mega sized humpy…..πŸ˜‰

I was once viciously attacked by a wounded Harbor Seal. It had a large red gash on his back. I was diving (San Clemente Island Ca) The damn thing was like a mad dog. Charging and snarling at me under water. At the surface, I was face to face with it's huge snarling teeth, and giant claws. Think of a rabid German Shepard, with bear claws on meth...in the water. We moved the boat to another dive site.

I must say that it was a wounded animal and that I really like Harbor Seals. One day I had a very young seal follow me around a reef for hours. All that time it, had a large starfish tucked under its front flipper. Like a child holding on to a baby doll.

I often hear people say that perhaps the animal was mistaken when they bit that human. I don't buy that. A shark knows the difference between a mackerel and a skipjack that is bleeding two miles away. They don't mistake a surfer for a seal. And a Harbor Seal knows the difference between a human and a salmon. That cute little seal bit that woman. It may have been sick, wounded etc., but it attacked a human.......and it is still out there........

I know Trump Island and the surrounding area fairly well. Decatur and Center have quite a bit of summer time aquatic sports going on right now. Paddle boarders, kayakers, beach combers.....They must all have to deal with the fact that a man attacking seal is lurking in the depths.

A beast so foul and cruel that the bones of full twenty men lie strewn about its lair!

Not much different than an alligator or crocodile...

Divers in California often use "lift bags" to lift heavy objects off the bottom ( by inflating them with air). They are often brightly colored. Harbor Seals, being, lovable, playful, clowns often like to play with them. They bat them back and forth with their claws, like a child plays with a ball. It really is cute to watch.....but those torn up bags are pricey.
