Very Memorable Experiences in your Life

How does the old Buffet song go? "But ah, the stories we could tell, and if it all blows up and goes to hell, I wish that we could sit upon a bed in some hotel, and listen to the stories we could tell." I like to save them for campfires when my kids are around. Or over a tequila when the sun is setting...IMG_20260430_214920.jpg

Some times it is not a very impactful moment, it can be a culmination of a bunch of small moments that have a long lasting impact on our lives, as well as others.

My Dad had a very patient and laid back approach to life. He taught me to how to set up camp, pitch tents, cook over a fire, and how to fish with gear and bamboo. Taught me where the fish could be, how to present the gear or fly and to observe what the water was communicating to us. We fished the OP a lot with our favorite being the Dose. I caught my first steelhead, on bamboo even, on the Dose. He took the time to help me understand the environment around us and how important it was. We fished a lot together until I got married and priorities changed, at least for me.

We would fish together once in a while, not nearly as often as we should of (looking back on life). Skip forward a bit.. After he retired, we started fishing together more. I would take a 1 or 2 week vacation every year where Dad and I would go fishing. I planned the trips (HiHuim, Cariboo or Kamloops areas), I bought a truck and camper and an Achilles, and would take him fishing. Sorta a full circIe - you think?

My Mom, an RN, noticed changes in my Dad. Mesothelioma and Parkinson's. Our times/vacations became even more important. Our time together was also a vacation for my Mom taking care of him. I did this for a number of years.

Our last and final fishing trip was to Rivers Inlet, We both knew it (unspoken). On our first day out, we caught our limit. This was a 5 day trip! Rivers Inlet said that was it. That night for dinner there was salmon. The next morning my Dad and I were told we were under our limit. Every night for our booked trip it occurred.

Those times together, Dad's personality and patience, and his giving back has had a dramatic impact on me. I have volunteered at Children's Hospital as Santa for a number of years, helped others create bonds with their family members, and put smiles on a number of faces.

It is not necessarily the big impacts, it could be the culmination of life's experiences.

Life is a journey. Lots of forks in that journey. Each one has an impact on us...

In 2019 I landed this brown from a WA creek.

In 2020, my buddy and I were fishing the same creek and he lands the exact same brown. She was slightly bigger than the year before, but exact same fish, from the exact same spot. When I saw it in the net, I thought - no fucking way. Then later looking at the spotting pattern, realized it was in fact the same fish. We're eskimo bros now 😁

From 1987 to 1988, I was working for the USFWS out of Gainesville, FL. A project I was hired to work on involved sampling the waters on Merritt Island and NASA. We were looking for Tilapia, but we also measured and tagged important recreational and commercial species of fish (tarpon, snook, redfish and mullet). The first one involved security. We had set a trammel net in public waters near NASA and as we were pulling in the net, I saw a couple of vehicles with lights flashing pull up to the water. Three men get out and two of them had M16s which were trained on us. The third gentleman had a megaphone and was instructing us to come to shore (he repeated himself a few times). Mind you we were in a marked boat. My co-worker yelled back and said we'll come in as soon as we are done pulling in this net. Fortunately things did not escalated and we motored to shore. We were told that although we were in public waters, we close to secured areas and that we were supposed to call in ahead of time and let them know we were going to be there. Not a great feeling having a M16 aimed at you and glad that the situation was easily resolved.

On another occasion we were pulling in a trammel net and a very large alligator decided he thought it could get a free meal. The alligator ended up getting so tangled in the net that it needed to be subdued. We contacted the refuge to have the alligator guy come meet so we could give him the gator. After dropping of the gator we went back to sampling. On the first net set, another gator approached the net, but fortunately it did not get tangled. Those were the only two gator incidents during my time.

It was neat driving on NASA property because we drove by the Vehicle Assembly Building, over the crawler tracks, and by the launch pads. I saw incredible wildlife as well.
I have many interesting events in my life...I'll share this one that is similar to @Bruce Baker's event.

I was trolling nearshore off Kailua Oahu when a RIB with a .50 cal on the bow comes roaring up to my boat...men dressed in uniform and weapons drawn (including the .50 cal pointing directly at us) informed us we had violated a restricted zone and escorted us out of the restricted zone...unbeknown to us was that President Obama was vacationing with his family in Kailua in a home that was on a canal that had access to the ocean...none of the men were smiling...

Once when I was in Nicaraugua Tarpon fishing our boat was pulled over by the Nicaraguan army.
We were pretty far into the jungle, near a village known for drug smuggling and opposition party types but our guide Marco said no problem, they'd paid them off, and had the permits.
There were about 15 sketchy looking dudes in the panga with AK's who were not very friendly. They went through every single fly box and gear bags, passports and such...offering to not look too hard if we paid then.
My limited, but decent Spanish picked up on the conversation with the guide, and it wasn't good.
Guide carried a picture of him and Ortega, proved better than a permit to fish in the area.

After a couple hours we were let go, and later that day I got a huge Grouper that fed a bunch of the villagers.

they don't play....was on my buddy's small trailer launched sailboat, we had sailed out to Point Loma in San Diego for some surf, on the way back I pointed to the warning signs where the sub pens on the San Diego river are.."Dave what happens if we cross those signs?" Dave laughed and shoved the tiller so we'd cross.
Answer - RIB boats with .50's..
